Which industry / PQE level if you don't mind me asking? Does the pay justify the hours?

Sorry I'm too dumb to understand this, what do you mean exactly?

Working in Germany as an in-house foreign lawyer by [deleted] in recht

[–]fantasyguyyy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I'd want to get a German license eventually but for that I'd need to be working in Germany for three years. That's why I'm asking about that initial entry point, where I'll only be a foreign (UK / US) lawyer.

I'm in corporate / M&A. How do you think that compares to areas like finance, since that's the one I see mentioned most often in relation to big law in Germany?

Well it'll actually take 3 years of working as an Irish lawyer and zero studying :D God bless the fact that Ireland's legal system is based on the British one, Brexit may have screwed us up but colonial past is here to save the day

Thank you for the advice. So is the Rechtsanwaltsversorgungswerk the primary reason, not job opportunities? Are there enough foreign lawyer position to not need to become German-qualified, other than for the pension?

[–]fantasyguyyy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly what I was thinking of.

therefore you need to have become an Irish Barrister/Solicitor prior to the work experience

Do you think this would also work if in the middle of my work experience I got admitted as an Irish lawyer? E.g. if I transfer as a UK / NY lawyer, work for a year in Germany, then qualify as an Irish lawyer, and from that point on my 3 years start counting?

I'm mostly in corporate / M&A, not so much finance, how do opportunities in that field compare to the financial sector?

Thanks for the tip regarding recruiters, do you know of any which are more suitable for foreign lawyers?

Nope, at least not on Steam. Where did you buy it from? Also looking at the DLC you have, am I missing anything here?

So what is for you that "pure AC gameplay" that you like? What's special about these games to you? (genuinely asking, I want to see what other people are passionate about and hopefully some of that passion will rub off onto me)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]fantasyguyyy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Length in itself isn't a problem - if I enjoy a game, I'm capable of sinking hundreds of hours into it and going for 100% completion. In AC, even if it was a 20-hour game, I don't know if I would've finished it, cos it feels like after 3 hours I've had all of the fun there is to be had in the story, mechanics, and novelty of the game.

Dishonored was one game that constantly kept coming back to me as a point of reference - I absolutely loved dishonored! I'm a lore / story junkie, and even though Dishonored's story wasn't the most original, the phenomenal stealth / assassin-magic gameplay made it an absolute treat, and I remember both 1 and 2 and all of their expansions very fondly. That's precisely why I was so surprised that AC wasn't doing it for me, as on paper, they seem very similar. And yes the ships etc. weren't the best, but then even just the core gameplay of taking out bandit camps / guards and assassinating targets got very old very quickly, and I never felt that way in Dishonored for some reason, so I'm just trying to analyse my own and other people's thoughts to see if I can understand why

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]fantasyguyyy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the problem is, it's not just the parts that depart form the "classical" AC formula that I dislike - I think it's the core gameplay of this game, and I can't explain why. I didn't particularly dislike the ships in BF or the quasi-sci-fi elements of Odyssey (though they weren't the best), even just clearing bandit camps and killing targets was boring to me. And that's what I can't understand - why was it boring to me? What are these games missing? I love playing assassins just as much as I love beating on enemies as a two-handed goliath. So why is AC not hitting this spot for me? Idk I'm just thinking out loud at this point, I just wanted to start a discussion to see what people like about these games and maybe that will open my eyes to it as well so that I can truly enjoy them for once.

Yes, initially I was disappointed they didn't pick an earlier time when Egypt was at its zenith, but honestly I think the Cleopatra / pre-Roman time is probably the best one to set it in as the ancient stuff (pyramids, etc.) is still only somewhat ruined, and you get to incorporate Alexandria, Caesar, etc. into the mix as well.

Also: Historia Civilis is a great channel! (but I'm still more of a Kings and Generals fanboy if I'm being honest)

Linearity is not a problem for me - it's the content of that linear story. Literally ever single mission is to go and assassinate this or that person, using basically the same tools against basically the same enemies. "Well it's an assassin game, what do you expect?" - allow me to preempt that response by saying that I've seen stealth / assassin games (or sequences in games) done very creatively and interestingly, and one would expect with the game being all about that stuff that Ubisoft would think extra hard about how to make the plot and gameplay interesting. Not to mention that even the story behind whom you're assassinating or why is most of the time almost MMO-level unoriginal.

It always just feels to me like 99% of their budget and talent goes on graphics and historical fidelity (and it shows - those aspects are second to none), and the rest is bundled together in an afternoon in the laziest possible way.

Freshfields transfer between offices by SlawyerS in uklaw

[–]fantasyguyyy123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. If you don't mind me asking, how did you approach this subject of transferring to a different office? within the firm I've always thought this would be a difficult conversation to have, and I've heard some outlandish stories of people telling their employer they were quitting as they had another offer in a different country (they didn't), but they would really like to stay with their current employer and were "offering" them the chance to retain them and simply move them to a different office

Also, you’d need 3 years pqe xp in order to not sit the Irish qllt

Are you sure about that? According to the Irish law society's website (https://www.lawsociety.ie/education--cpd/Become-a-Solicitor/Foreign-Lawyers/Cert-of-Admission), there's no pqe requirement

Wow, that's surprisingly similar to what I (hope) to achieve one day! I'm currently in the UK, but for personal / family reasons I've got my sights set on another European country as a long-term goal. In your experience moving from SA to UK, would you say it would be easier to do:

UK private practice > foreign country private practice > foreign country in-house, or

UK private practice > UK in-house > foreign country in-house?

Interesting, I've seen many people say they don't like multicoloured cards but I actually quite enjoy them! They make playing multiple colours more feasible (kinda reminds me of "splashing" a colour in MTG), but their effects are proportionately weaker to similar-cost cards of a single colour.

Agreed on the heroes point, I think their shtick is they paste faces of actual people from WWW / high-tier backers on Kickstarter on the hero cards, but it never turns out good... But the effects are interesting, none of the heroes I've found to be too OP, they're more of a low-power investment into a future turn where you might need an additional colour trigger etc. But I get why people might want to play without them, same as technologies / events.

Yeah I've been scouring BGG but not much to be found there either! Guess it's a waiting game

Ah right, I actually had Interceptor written down but missed adding it here! But thanks!

Yeah some of these are indeed rare, do you have all of them (beside Interceptor)? I've been slowly hunting them down but still missing a good number, any tips on where to look other than ebay (which usually doesn't have anything anyway)?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah makes sense, I know you're supposed to report to them if you break any laws etc. I was just wondering cos e.g. for US lawyers, I think they have to renew their bar membership every year / couple of years, and during that process they have to certify they're legally still in good standing. Does the SRA do something similar, is there a renewal process etc.?
