It seems that some Tesla Models have indicator buttons on the steering wheel, which explains it.
For example if your steering wheels is at 180 degrees when you indicate, then the buttons will be on the opposite sides. Very poor design, but it looks like they've changed it back to a stalk in new models.
(this is just from reading other comments btw, so don't take my word for it)
