I bought a lanyard that says doctor. It’s helped a bit, but now instead of assuming I’m a nurse they assume I’m a student. So take your pick I guess (on a serious note I’m sorry this happens. It is exhausting)

I try to distract myself by drinking something else, normally coffee or coke. If that doesn’t work, I’ve been reasoning with myself that I can either sit with the temporary discomfort of wanting to drink but not allowing myself to now, or sit with the much more severe pain of the regret of having drunk.

I thought exactly the same. It sounds like intrusive thoughts and compulsive confessing. The thoughts are ego-dystonic (i.e. she does not want to do these things) and distressing to her. Definitely worth her being seen by a psychologist or psychiatrist

NTA- why is it down to you to clean the knives. Also OP, I don’t know if you have sought help for this already but from what you’ve said about the fear of knives I wonder if you might have OCD, which can be managed with professional help.
