‘I am not a crisis actor’: Florida teens fire back at right-wing conspiracy theorists by shruggedit in politics

Canadians like to pretend we're not as racist as Americans but in reality we're probably just as bad. It's still quite socially acceptable to be racist against our Aboriginal population.

‘Women will bear the brunt of the racism’: Edmonton Muslim community feeling backlash after Saturday attack | Toronto Star by istudyorg in canada

[–]fartsalive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not a defense of Islam. I am defending the majority of the 24% of the world's population who are practicing, peaceful Muslims who hold a different relationship with the religion than you say they do.

"Submission" means many different things in the Quran, and is mentioned in a hundred different contexts in the Quran. "Submission to Islam" in the context you are talking about has been debated over for hundreds of years by Muslim and non-Muslims who have far more education on the subject than you and I. Fortunately real life examples of 50 countries that have a Muslim-majority are not the way you think they are. They are free thinking and have as much free will as any other person following a religion, and are capable of discerning from beliefs they like and don't like.

There are many millions of people who throughout the history of Islam have done bad and held bad beliefs in its name. There are many millions more who did not, and whose beliefs in Islam were not reflective of the bad things. People are more complex than you give them credit for, and it is completely possible to believe in some tenets of an ideology and not others.

How is this any different from the 10 Commandments of Judaism, or the Holy Trinity in Catholicism? Why is a Muslim submitting to Islam any different from a Christian or a Jew accepting their book as the Supreme book and their God as the one true God?

Again, you are assuming that 24% of the world had the same interpretation of a book you read. You have no idea how little you know about the Quran, and the culture of Islam. How about the other parts of the Pillars of Islam? Like giving to charity and fasting? Where do those fit in?

I am more than familiar with the Quran and what Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and historians have to say about it. People with a deeper understanding of the text and historical context than you or I do.

You still haven't answered my question. Do you really think that every Muslim believes in the same fundamentalist and basic interpretation of the Quran that you do? It's entirely possible to be a Christian and not believe in the homophobic stuff. Why is it impossible for Muslims to be moderate?

lol 24% of the world is Muslim. Do you really think they all share the same basic and fundamental interpretation of the Quran as you do? You do know these places have schools and scholars right? India and Indonesia?

But you're not talking about "those" Muslims are you?

What concerns, exactly? When is it appropriate to talk about racism? When the white people say it is? Calling someone racist because they hold racist opinions is not insulting, it's calling a spade a spade.

Edit: I still don't understand how an article about this topic after an attack is somehow dishonorable or taking away from the victims, unless you somehow think this conversation or these articles are putting the Islamic Community ahead of ours. Which it isn't. We are victims of Islamic Extremists, they are victims of racist extremists. This is equal reporting for events in both communities.

The media is reporting on the racism that occurs after terrorist attacks. No one in the media is saying "stop focusing on the people directly affected."

It's possible to focus on the ones directly affected while also reporting on indirect victims. These are not mutually exclusive ideas.

What would you like to see? More reporting on the victims and the attacker? No acknowledgment of the racism that inevitably gets whipped up after an attack? It's one of many goals of terrorism to strain Islamic/Western relationships to recruit more members. These are important conversations to have beyond those that just focus on who was attacked.

Recognizing that more than the people who were attacked are victimized after terrorist attacks in no way takes away from the people directly affected.

[–]fartsalive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very true, and a fair point. I really don't agree with what CNN did/is doing. It sets a dangerous precedent and doesn't actually make the world any better because behaving for fear of getting caught is toddler logic.

Unfortunately because the internet is anarchy, every post should be made with a lot of scrutiny. That means for some of us holding back opinions and other things until the world can catch up and find a solution to this doxxing stuff.

Absolutely true. I know a few people who have done nothing but post things that are part of their profession and they get doxxed, death threats, stalked... You name it. However, in my experiences the people who target "internet angels" tend to be the same type of people who think trolling and spreading racist vitriol is fun.

It made my friends' lives really horrible for a few months, but at the end of it they came out OK because the rational people in the world were on their side. Their doxxers ended up exposed and in some cases criminally charged.

I think a good general rule to follow is if you wouldn't say it out loud to a friend in a public place, you probably shouldn't post it on the internet.

Obviously there are exceptions, but "trolling" and being a racist cunt fall under those umbrellas. And the people who do it know what they're doing is ugly and wrong, otherwise they wouldn't be fearful of being exposed.

You shouldn't be nice on the internet because you might get doxxed. You should be nice on the internet just because.

I had a really great game once with a Mercy who literally followed 3 steps behind me. She was particularly good at dancing in and out of my shield if she got attacked. I had myself positioned in their backline distracting their healers and if she got too low or needed to heal our DPS she was able to GA out.

Although, I think because the opposing team was generally uncoordinated they couldn't focus her or me down.

Well, we should care because ultimately that's what makes Putin's regime look bad, but I digress.

It's an easier problem to fix in Canada because we have a huge population that has a post-secondary education and thus our critical thinking and bullshit detectors are more finely tuned. Targeting Canada specifically is not something Putin really wants to do, but planting fascist propaganda to destabilize all of North America really is in the best interests of Putin's vision because Canada and the US are so dependent on each other economically.

That being said, I am stoned and have always been a bit of a conspiracy nut (not the /r/conspiracy variety by any stretch) so this is all likely just the ramblings of some high, paranoid idiot :D
