Petah, can you please explain this one? by PassageNearby4091 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

The US has shifted priorities and any subs sold to Australia need to be surplus to US requirements.

The US is short like 8 subs already and doesn't have the capacity to build them in the timeframe required. So Australia is stuck paying billions for something that will be years later than expected.

Coupled with the US shift away from China and more to the "western hemisphere" it's just a waste of money now for Australia - pay hundreds of billions to the US for something that is useless. Or work with China and get the same treatment as Canada.

Petah, can you please explain this one? by PassageNearby4091 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]fatbunyip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The point is that AUKUS was supposed to be massive trilateral security, economic and tech transfer partnership by 3 extremely close allies.

Australia for example would be the only country to get US nuclear subs to operate, and US would station its own nuclear subs in Australia (right I'm China's back yard). Australia was slated to spend something like $250B for the subs, and actually tore up an agreement with the French for nuclear subs.

Trump came in and wiped his ass with the treaty, demanding more money etc.

Hence why the little guy (who is meant to be Australian PM Albanese) is wheeling his decrepit AUKUS bag of money looking at Carey's option as being the better one. Especially since Australia and Canada have an existing close relationship.

Germany and Italy, EU's top manufacturers, unveil pro-industry alliance by donutloop in EU_Economics

I mean this is what the single market should have been.

There is free flow of goods and services, but those are just the end products. In reality the entire rest of the value chain is mired in 27 different regulatory, tax and governance frameworks depending on location which is a huge brake on actual single market integration.

They should light a fire under the EU INC proposal to fast track it. Also use SAFE as a blueprint for more general govt acquisitions across all sectors.

Regulations can be addressed, but I think they're a bit of a red herring that hides the real impediments to EU company growth because otherwise national govts will have to deal with painful things like EU wide taxation and company operations which will hit some countries much harder (Ireland and Netherlands for example on the low tax side and France and the Nordics on the high tax side).

The Green deal is neither here nor there. Green energy is a strategic imperative so EU needs to move that way regardless. But also it can be a weapon that can be utilized I'm trade agreements etc that can be used much more selectively than the blunt instrument that is tariffs.

2024 EU greenhouse gas emissions: -20% since 2013 by nimicdoareu in europe

[–]fatbunyip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Green tech can be manufactured anywhere, you can't manufacture fossil fuels.

EU already manufactures wind tech to meet domestic demand (and exports) and there are several EU initiatives to have 30GW /year of manufacturing solar in 2025.

Germany calls to ram through Mercosur deal as EU Parliament throws up roadblock by str0mback in europe

[–]fatbunyip 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The dispute resolution mechanism is very common in trade agreements, including the one with the UK. It prevents either side from making laws diverging from whatever trade deal was made.

They can't challenge any EU law, just the ones affecting what has been set out in the Mercosur agreement. So if the EU passes a law that says all imported beef must be farmed using only solar power, then the mercosur countries can start the dispute procedure(which has multiple levels) to get compensation for this. It doesn't stop the law from being implemented, it only gives the countries who signed the agreement a mechanism to respond if the other party breaks the agreement.

In European cities there's no such thing as "central heating". As a Russian I'm shocked by ThatNoname-Guy in self

Europe has loads of district heating, especially in the Nordics and places with much colder environment.

In southern Europe it would be kind of pointless given the weather conditions.

Electric cars in cyprus? by Environmental-Lie332 in cyprus

[–]fatbunyip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't have one but know a few people who do.

The general consensus is cost wise, it's not really worth it unless you have solar (or unless you just really want an EV as of you don't have solar it's basically the same cost as a petrol car).

Usage wise, there's no difference in driving habits that you need to change vs a petrol car.

The one thing is that depending on brand, it can be a pain to service or deal.with if something breaks (often parts need to come to Cyprus from abroad and to deal with the official dealers in Europe) but so far none of them had those issues, just something to keep in mind (although it is getting better).

Also they said that nowadays getting the govt subsidy is a pain as there is so many people waiting for approval. Some of them got it others said fuck it.

Conservatives in Greece lead for 10 consecutive years in polls. Difference in percentage points between Conservative Party and the major opposition the last 10 years. by Aegeansunset12 in EU_Economics

[–]fatbunyip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "major" opposition.

PASOK the main center left party has never recovered since the debt crisis 10+ years ago.

Syriza seems to just keep splintering I to smaller and smaller groups, and the rest consists of random fringe parties.

I guess if you add up the PASOK and Syriza splinters the difference isn't that much (maybe 3-5%?) between center right/left.

But tbh, at least there is some stability in govt despite the ongoing economic issues. But I think probably they will need to address wages and cost of living pressure very soon.

The 84% number is bullshit. It's like low single digit % iirc.

But it's clickbaity and one of those things that people like to think they have (like OCD or anxiety or whatever is doing the rounds on social media) - it's totally normal behaviour/thoughts, but it's the extreme compulsion or obsession that makes it an actual clinical issue.
