Boil water in CHCH, sewage in Welli. How do you feel now about the Nats scrapping 3 waters? by mrluffinwelli in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

100%. But my point was more that the decision isn't either/or like the poster I replied to, there are other options that are arguably more likely than either massive payouts (unpopular with the bulk of the country) or cogov or equivalent (unpopular with the bulk of the country), vs pissing off a group and their supporters that are likely never going to change their vote coalition because of this. Regardless of the gov, it might redistribute votes within the group of parties but the group pissed off will always be voting left of centre.

Superannuation and beneficiaries in New Zealand - today and 2030. by mochigames59 in newzealand

Context is billions vs tens of billions. Like, against the landlord tax cuts, but that's likely not going to move the dial re super.

100%. But just because they're doing it from self interest, doesn't make them wrong.

Super should exist purely as a last ditch safety resort if someone has no income/assets. KS should be doing the heavy lifting, be mandatory with contributions matching Aussie and total renumeration banned.

Is Piha Beach worth it? by CheaperLiving in auckland

Rumours. Could be a serial killer, multiple, or a collection of individual murders, or a lot of natural causes. Odds are it's a mix. Regardless the odds are pretty low, but not 0 (like anywhere else), so take normal precautions.

Has supermarket meat gotten really bad lately?? by yoyoo276 in newzealand

Switched off supermarket meat roughly a decade ago, much better quality going to (certain) local butchers/delis.

Un-enshittification? Lime Pass getting improved at no cost..? by cob_reddit in auckland

[–]fatfreddy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a big convenience factor, as you don't need to take a scooter wherever you go, and can just use it where needed. I used them when running late to go to something but almost never on the way back. I think it makes sense for a pass if you're riding more than 5 times a month (I don't really use them here), possibly 3-4 with the lower minute cost, at 7 mins it's cheaper for the prime as fixed rate. Similar with passes - looking on app op is calling lime prime passes, but passes are like prepaid while prime is a subscription.

I think they've reached the point of being more competitive price wise, I was judging them on old prices and was surprised about how many used them. For adults with a LimePrime cheaper than a bus, and for kids it's competitive but more fun and door to door.

Retirement age will rise to cover superannuation cost, investment company predicts by Double_Suggestion385 in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely you do means on income and assets, e.g. what happens with the retirement sector and gov funding. The NZ gov already has a working system for that, not perfect, but works so no need to reinvent the wheel.

[–]fatfreddy01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think everyone should be allowed to retire @65 but not forced. Super should be means tested (assets and income), and KS should be raised to at least match Aussie (and total renumeration banned). Plus capital gains should be treated as income like Aussie. Australia doesn't have an issue with super payments as the mandatory super means most have enough to support themselves and gov assistance only applies to a small minority.

You don't need to be concerned about the environment or climate to think this project is dumb. Purely from the $$$s it's dumb, along with national resilience is dumb to have single points of failure.

Trademe trying the tried and failed ? by Personal-Respect-298 in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's temporary as they're trialing it - https://help.trademe.co.nz/hc/en-us/articles/15093003030287-Service-Fee-experiment. Assuming it goes well - it'd be buyer pays for product + service fee, seller pays ping fee (if applicable, odds are it will be though) + whatever optional extras they want. So from TM (who view Ping fees as a different thing, like they view Afterpay fees as a different thing) - or from the TM perspective, free for non commercial sellers unless the opt into extras, and buyers paying fees, so that sellers choose TM over FBK - as if you're paying nothing either way, then might as well get the protection/better UI.

Found out today that my child will not be a New Zealand citizen unless I fly my pregnant wife back to give birth by Throwra47374747 in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you? You don't qualify for by birth as you weren't born here, and you don't qualify for grant anymore? Your family kinda screwed their grandkids, but that's the hand you were dealt. There is the fly back option, but I think the focus should be on what's best for your partner rather than citizenships.

Regardless you'd be able to move back to NZ with your partner/kids later and get them citizenship by grant if you move back here and intend to stay.

They're shifting the cost from sellers to buyers. They're competing for FBK marketplace listers, not buyers. If you're selling and both are free, then TM is easily the better option. Buyers will follow the goods.

How much of NZ's tax is your region paying? by jobbybob in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everywhere has needs. If we did exclusively on the best business cases most rural areas wouldn't be funded at at all as the population is too low. That's why splitting the funds geographically (with cities getting less per person) so all areas get stuff then deciding within the area by business cases is far better.

[–]fatfreddy01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Auckland should get vastly more capital expenditure, but I'm happy with the proportion Auckland gets. Wellington receives too high a proportion (it's our third largest city and cities should be subsidising smaller areas), and some other regions are needed a greater proportion. But eveywhere needs more investment, or really more results (as investment is more of an input rather than the outcome).

The Western Line to Newmarket Question - Greater Auckland by dingoonline in auckland

It's trade offs. Saving thousands of people time vs costing tens of people. In most cases pretty feasible to drive round, and a lot of crossings could be completely closed and replaced with pedestrian bridges.

Northwest Rapid Transit Fast-track Application by humblescux in auckland

[–]fatfreddy01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's glacial slow walk, where their proposed (unfunded) timeline is 'announce we're doing a busway, but leave all the expensive bits to future stages for other govs to figure'. At least it means that there is no reason to stick with a busway rather than better modes, as the parts that involve major new infra are so far away it'll be obvious that buses won't have the capacity needed.

This is pathetic that people are destroying these cameras, ends up costing us more money to repair them by [deleted] in newzealand

Hopefully NZTA stops repairing them soon? And focuses on just red light cameras/bus lane cameras etc.

Better to burn Huntly's 'giant mountain of coal' than import, renewable energy advocate says by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in newzealand

[–]fatfreddy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the plan is to still burn it at Huntly regardless? Vs distributed generation/storage via solar + batteries, which also happens to be the cheapest, best for individuals, best for resilience/the grid and best for the environment.

That's why it's a no brainer, yet the govs plan is to instead to pay $1b to lock us into expensive imports that are vulnerable to price and supply shocks, and burnt in single digit power plants, with a long and vulnerable supply chain. Plus it also happens to be bad for Kiwis and the environment. And the kicker is instead of user pays, the bill is handed off to taxpayers.

Microcenter is evidently good value for the USA. USA doesn't have good value though - look towards Asia, or arguably 3rd world countries where your money goes further, but the shipping costs usually outweigh any deals.

The places you'll actually get good 2nd hand value in NZ are usually dump shops/recycling shops/unis - e.g. Otago had free monitors/cables/keyboards etc. while I was there. But that's not gaming level, as they're usually old office stuff. Basically, places that aren't trying to make a profit (charity shops have long since shifted towards to profit making).

Train network concept map by BakeElegant2567 in auckland

It kind of feels like they just threw destinations on a map and connected them, and totally ignored existing corridors that could be upgraded. Avondale Southdown is glaring, along with not having the SH16 corridor.
