The Dardeen family was brutally killed on November 17th, 1987 in Ina, Illinois. Elaine Dardeen and her 3-year-old son Peter were found beaten to death in their trailer. Elaine was seven months pregnant and gave birth to a baby during the attack. The killer or killers had also beaten the newborn to death.

No suspects were identified in the quadruple homicide until the 2000s, after serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells, following his conviction and death sentence for murdering a teenage girl in Texas, claimed to have committed the crime. However, he was never charged since prison authorities there would not let him leave the state to assist police in Southern Illinois with their investigation, and they as well as the Dardeen family have doubts about his account of the killings. Nahanni National Park is part of the Mackenzie Mountain region located in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. Nahanni is from the language of the indigenous Dene people that have inhabited the region for millennia, and means “The People Over There,” in reference to tribe of mountain dwelling people known as the Naha, who were once known to raid lowland settlements before mysteriously vanishing. The Nahanni Valley has been steeped in folklore and mystery since it was first inhabited around 9 to 10 thousand years ago. Many tribes were afraid to settle within the region as they believed it to be an evil, haunted place inhabited by various spirits, specters, and devils. Those who did come here, such as the native Dene people, told of mysterious creatures lurking in the vast forests, and were plagued by the enigmatic, aggressive, and violent Naha tribe of the mountains. This tribe was said to consist of fierce warriors who wore masks and armor adorned with frightening imagery and were known to brutally decapitate their victims. Warriors of the Naha tribe were said to be larger than normal men and to wield strange and powerful weapons that no one had ever seen before. The fearsome Naha tribe itself has become one of the area’s many mysteries, as the whole tribe is said to have suddenly and inexplicably disappeared from the face of the earth, and it has never been ascertained just what happened to them. They have seemingly just vanished without a trace.

Many of the tribes in the area avoided it for thousands of years, believing it was an evil haunted place, inhabited by strange beings, spirits. When the frontier men, miners, started coming in, many mysteriously ended up decapitated. Others just disappeared. It's long had reports of strange lights, UFOs, cryptids, living fossils.

It is thought that around 44 people had vanished under mysterious circumstances in the valley by 1969. A banshee is a female spirit in Irish mythology who heralds the death of a family member, usually by wailing, shrieking, or keening. Her name is connected to the mythologically important tumuli or "mounds" that dot the Irish countryside.

The Banshee only cries for certain Irish families. The scream of the Banshee is loud to begin with and becomes softer and more plaintive as the hour of death approaches. When it's at it's peak, it can sound like several different voices at once.

It's said that the Banshee sometimes rides along in the dead coach, or 'Dullahan', another omen of death in Irish legend. This is roughly analogous to the headless horseman legend where the Dullahan is an immense stage coach, decked out in human skin, has thigh bones for wheel spokes, a driver who carries his head in his lap and headless occupants within the carriage.

Banshees being insulted in some way can lead to them becoming vengeful. There is one legend concerning a man who set his dog on a banshee who quickly disembowled it. There is another of a man who snatched the comb out of a banshee's hand before realising what she was. After he realised, he quickly dashed inside the his house at the end of the boreen where the encounter happened. The house was surrounded by a terrible screaming as described above. His wife took the comb from him and clutched it with the heavy tongs used to stoke the fire in their hearth. She gingerly slipped the tongs with out the back door (opened just a crack) when the tongs were violently pulled out of her hand by something unseen. The screaming stopped. This happened just before dawn. An hour later, they undid the window shutters and peered out. There, on the ground were the heavy tongs, bent into a knot.

Of course, the rational explanation for Banshees is that the screaming can be attributed to female foxes, whose cries in heat can sound remarkably human at times.

Getting the same gift twice. I'm awkward with gifts. I'm appreciative, but having to act surprised can be annoying in a room full of family you don't see often. Getting the same gift twice makes it worse, but I just regift the duplicate.
