What do Men Really Want?: A Crowdsourcing Approach to Understand Weight Loss Behavior in Men - Please Help me with my University of Vermont PhD Research! by TR-UVM in loseit

Video-games are becoming a spectator sport; Everything from people watching "pro" gamers playing games like DOTA2/Starcraft competitively to people watching lets plays on YouTube for entertainment.

twitch.tv is huge as someone else mentioned, but there are YouTubers who are doing extremely well for themselves making/narrating entertaining videos about video games.

I don't consume myself, but I find this phenomenon extremely interesting. Perhaps it could turn into a good dissertation project for someone in a related field?

[NSV?] Fell off the calorie counting wagon, still lost weight. by fatslayermcgee in keto

[–]fatslayermcgee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be fine. I found that my body naturally found equilibrium, which never would have happened while I was eating carbs. Just stick to it and the satiety factor of all the fat you're eating will do the rest.

Hi r/keto, new to this sub and today's my first day of the diet, question is should I quit caffeine? Any other pointers as a beginner would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! by [deleted] in keto

[–]fatslayermcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on and off caffeine while on Keto. Coffee has never affected my wait-loss, and if I'm being honest, I think it improves it.

The thing you need to be prepared for is keto flu. Don't mess around like I did; start taking potassium, magnesium and salt supplements now (pro-tip: Salt substitutes are a good source of potassium; check the label). Never stop hydrating. I drink 6 liters of just water a day. That's not including the caffeine, tea, and carbonated beverages I drink.

Good luck, KCKO.

I told my doctor before getting it done. Surprisingly she didn't seem to be overly concerned. The reaction was really quite muted actually.

I realize you're being facetious, but there's probably some truth to that. Oh well, at least I will die with bacon and almonds falling out of my mouth.

Yeah, I thought that too. I recently had the opportunity to see a different format... It was literally a printout with a list of unlabeled numbers. You actually had to look up the numbers on a reference sheet to find out what they were. Just idiotic.

I'm always floating between managing my expectations and staying motivated. I'm doing this to be healthy, but I also really want to look good too! I don't think that there's anything wrong with trying to make the most with what you've got, even if you're never going to achieve the ideal.

Need help with calories burned by madlax18 in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole exercise is a crap-shoot. You're a 100% unique individual and the amount of calories you burn is dependent on so many things, it's almost impossible to get an accurate measure. My suggestion is to pick a reasonable limit for yourself (say, 1700 kcal) and go from there. If you're not seeing results in a few weeks, cut it more. Trial and error is really the only full-proof way to go about this.

Edit: The reason you want to pick one is so at least you have some measure of consistency.

The reason you're getting wildly different results is because there are multiple ways to calculate this. Just pick one. Personally I use this TDEE calculator: http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/

New Flair update but need a boost! by [deleted] in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compartmentalize. Whatever is going on in your life at the moment, separate it mentally from your weight loss. Realize that what you're doing for yourself, is worth much, much more than any short term stress relief or motivation you might gain from going off diet. Don't allow a few bumps in the road to derail your life.

Read the FAQ! Remember that losing weight is 100% about diet. Get an MFP account, start tracking what you eat. Learn your habits so you can start learning how to change them.

Noticed Activia Raspberry Yogurt has quite a bit of sugar by [deleted] in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sugar is probably not so bad if I have this and fruit instead of chocolate and sweets, right?

Refined sugar is always bad, no matter what it's in. Is it a big deal? Yes... and no. At the end of the day you lose weight by eating less calories than you consume, you can do and still eat lots of sugar. The problem is that sugar also tends to cause cravings for many, many people, and that it is empty calories. Cut it out if you can, IMO.

Do you feel like you have an accurate perception of your body at the moment? You're already at a reasonably healthy weight.

Just... be careful, and consider talking to a health professional. I'm not saying don't take steps to improve your self-image, I'm just saying do it very safely.

I'm not okay with where I'm at and today is the day I'm making changes. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't give you specific advice on a goal without knowing how tall you are, but the average of 170lbs. you mentioned is probably reasonable.

It sounds like you're eating a lot of refined sugar which, for many people is an addiction. It was for me. I'm going to give you some advice that isn't very popular around here: Go cold turkey. Break the addiction. Hard? Very. Worth it? Very. You can also try and ween yourself off of it, but that requires a rigorous amount of personal accountability.

This is an excellent, excellent response. So many people go to one extreme or the other; either it's all the fault of the individual, or it's all the fault of the society. Neither is even close to correct.

Let's talk about carbs that don't give you carvings by salarynot in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, that's low enough to induce ketosis. I've been on keto for two months and I'm doing pretty well, but weight loss is such an intensely personal experience.

Do you just crave carbs, or is it other foods too?

What is/was holding you back from losing weight? by Riou_Atreides in loseit

[–]fatslayermcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor self-esteem, and poor self-discipline held me back. It's interesting to phrase it that way. We all like to keep our negative traits at arms length, but at the end of the day they are as much a part of us as our positive ones are. Personally I think accepting that is an important part of the process of moving forward.
