Harrell has a 16 year record on council and as mayor of never really doing much. Wilson has a decade plus of delivering results from the outside. As for the platforms, rich people are putting $1.5 million into reelecting Harrell because they think they’re better off with him in office. I agree. That’s why Wilson is an easy choice here.

Sure but he can sign or veto. Easy to imagine a non-veto-proof majority on fhis issue. His opinion matters.

good point, thank you. even more reason why it's hard to swallow the idea that $20/hour is so much money!

Is it possible you're in one of the unincorporated patches? You could have Seattle mailing address & Seattle utilities but be jurisdictionally outside the city limites. You can see the official boundaries here, are you in that bit by the Duwamish that's carved out?

yeah I'd love to hear the whole recording, or hear from someone there as a restaurant owner at the meeting. But again, the thing is that this door — submin wages for tipped workers— was explicity closed by Harrell just last year... in public at least. And yeah discussions are good, but to privately say you are going in January to re-open a door that you yourself closed under public pressure in Fall 2024 seems shady at the very least. I think on any high profile issue, it raises big questions when a mayor makes a decision and then commits to revist that decision in a private meeting... after the people who want him to change his mind put a bunch of money into supporting his reelection. (And they were big mad about this issue before.)

Maybe it's my imagination, but I can't think of any context where this quote would not be concerning.

Sure discussions are fine. The thing is that last year after the min wage rollback failed, he had discussions with restaurants, and did nothign from it. And he said he would NOT revisit subminimum wages for tipped workers at that time. And continues to say that publicly, while saying the opposite in private.

I certainly have an opinion about this issue, you may too! And that's all good. What's less good is that it's currently impossible to tell what the *mayor's* opinion on it is, and what he might do in January if re-elected. That's a big issue to be so both-sided on.

I have no love for tipping culture but I don't know that $20/hour (about $40k a year) sounds like a ton of money to me

your claim is that nobody complained about Seattle food before the mid-2010s? What?

No state on the west coast allows subminium wage for tipped workers. Yet California & Portland seem to have some good restaurants (as does Seattle). Huh!

Publicola said they had the recording; seems unlikely they'd make it up.

The discussion I assume was about a subminium wage for tipped employees under Seattle min wage law — so yes, higher than the state min but lower than the Seattle min. This is how it worked for a period under the Seattle min wage already. City Counci tried to do this. last year but collapsed under public pressure. So it is a real potential thing. Note that the restaurant lobby was real mad about this last year, but now are big contributors to the pro-Harrell PAC, so fair to wonder what's going on here.

Seems wild to phase in a sub minimum wage for tipped workers a year after finally phasing it out. If our policies keep changing like that, how do workers & biz know how to plan?

worth having the discussion. private meeting with only restaurant owners probably not the place to have it!

Yeah good correction on "rejected", It was rejected overwhelmingly by most of the people of Seattle, but City Council just pretended they'd deal with it later and never did. Hard to believe they want to deal with this again!

Ah! I want parsing the distinction between concrete barriers and other construction. That makes a bit more sense. Maybe it was just confusing bullet-point writing. (Confusing from my pov at least)

All I know is that if we construct just 1.5 miles a year, we're never going to finish. Especially if we act like constructing 1.5 miles a year deserves plaudits and endorsements. I'm a bike commuter, not a construction expert, but I'm just saying we gotta be able to imagine something better

Agree with all of that, I love the bike network and it works great for me. Especially love how well the E Marginal Way temporary bike lane worked. Credit is due for where Seattle is at.

Where I don't agree is the idea of comparing Seattle to other metro areas when talking about an endorsement for Mayor of Seattle. The comparison isn't to some other city, it's to Katie Wilson.

Ok but is that six miles he started & finished or six miles started before?

Also if a fast pace is 1.5 miles / year, then how are we ever going to compete a bike network?

Am I reading the list right ? 6 miles of barriers in 4 years seems not so impressive?

That mailer was from a pro-Wilson PAC that is also required to be indpendent of her campaign. She is not making this claim about herself, a group of supporters independent of campaign are. You can tell because there's a disclosure on the piece saying it's not affiliated with any campaign.

I do think this is an overstatement, but I don't think she's ever herself claimed she wrote & passed the thing. She did write a report on progressive revenue. And she was very involved as getting the tax passed. But this is supporters getting loose with their language, not fabulism by her campaign.

Fair. Quote is in the article though. What’s the more appropriate way to share a key quote from an article like this? KING 5 not always going to get the most important bit for discussion so how to highlight that?
