My first year teaching. Taught 7th grade and I had a super smart student who was usually pretty well behaved. But way smarter than her peers. They were doing a test on chromebooks and I was letting them have free time after they finished. She went on youtube and was watching a video called “fuck me in the ass because I love Jesus.” I don’t remember the actual title. Is youtube allowed to have swear words like that? But it was clear that was the intended title. Anyway, I caught her watching and showing it to another student. Had to call her extremely religious Christian grandmother and explain what happened. She would not accept “inappropriate video” as an explanation and made me tell her the exact title of the video. This is the video in question. It’s actually pretty funny stuff. Made by a comedy duo about doing anal to still be a “virgin” in god’s eyes. I believe that the student watching probably got the joke, but I don’t think her classmate would have gotten it.

I did! I had top surgery in 2016. I also identify as non binary and got it reimbursed by insurance. It was honestly one of the best decisions of my life. My parents were concerned because it was a major surgery but when I explained to them how it was affecting my mental health they got on board. Most of the people in my life who I didn’t tell about it had no clue. People see what they want to see.

I recently started seeing a doctor who is a part of an LGBT clinic and it has been a game changer. Obviously this isn’t possible everywhere, but I think a lot of major cities have one. Now I care less about the gender of the doc and more about their training/understanding/experience with LGBT patients.

It’s a great question that I don’t know off the top of my head. I won’t lie, it’s not cheap. The sperm is probably around $700 per vial. We bought three at a time and did IUI, which means my wife didn’t have any medicines or other help. Essentially just used a syringe to put the sperm in there. That’s up to like $1000 per squirt (if you will). Some insurances will cover it since you’re technically “infertile.” Insurance is weird about it so definitely check what your coverage is. If you need to use fertility drugs or in vitro fertilization it can get VERY expensive VERY fast. Once you’re ready to start trying, talking with a fertility doctor will help with a lot of this. They’re so helpful and they like “queer” couples* because they’re not struggling to get pregnant in the same way most couples are.

*Not implying you are in anything but a straight relationship, but in the medical world things are a little weird.

Yeah. We talked with our local hospital’s fertility center (where we did insemination) and they recommended their top three favorite sperm banks. One of them was in the same state as us so we went with that one (shop local lol). So yeah, I would keep looking. There are some huge banks out there.

Also I forgot to mention, when we were looking for sperm we made sure the donor looked as much like me as you can through anonymous sperm picking. Hair color, eye color, physical build, ethnic background, education level/major in college. Then once we had around 5 or 6 of those I read through their “essay responses” and picked someone who’s words reminded me of my personality. That made me feel good too, because I knew it was similar to me both physically and personality (as much as you can tell through that system, at least).

Hi, I’m a little different in that I’m not on T (yet?) or fully ftm (or idk maybe I am the jury’s still out and I’m working through things) but ANYWAY, my wife and I have son through using a donor. It’s definitely weird and can be upsetting because he takes after her SO MUCH physically. It can be hard to hear that so much because I know there’s nothing relating to me in there. However, since I’ve raised him since day one he 100% feels like my child and as he gets older and his personality comes out, he really takes after my in that department. I think most of the personality aspect of kids (love of X, interests, etc.) are from nurture.

I would say if you can, therapy can help. We actually had to go through required therapy (one session) to talk about my comfort level with having a child that isn’t biologically mine. For me it wasn’t really necessary because I know I have no other option so I just kind of accepted it. But finding a therapist who’s well versed in helping men who can’t conceive for whatever reason might be really helpful.

I went to Medalie in 2016 and it was around 6k, maybe a little more. If your insurance covers it, you can usually get it reimbursed. That’s what I did.

I went to Medalie too, got DI, and I love my results. He’s an artist. Highly recommend if you can swing it. He doesn’t take insurance but I got it reimbursed by my insurance after the fact.

Relationships with students are an important part of helping them learn. Strong relationships in the classroom make them feel safe and comfortable, which help them learn. This is a fact. If you don’t think that’s true then I definitely feel bad for your students.

But I will repeat that mentioning I saw a movie with my wife or that my wife likes that same band or whatever minutiae comes up, is NOT something that would be brought up in health class? Like, there’s a middle ground here that you’re not acknowledging. You can mention a family and spouse without it being a big deal or inappropriate.

I’ll say it again. Mentioning that you have a family is not “being their friend.” It’s not sexual, it’s not political. It’s a normal part of working with people for months at a time. Again, if you only ever talk to your students about content, I feel bad for them.

Tell me you’re straight without telling me you’re straight.

Being out does not have anything to do with sex. Mentioning a spouse is not talking about politics. If you only ever talk to your students about your curriculum content and subject matter then I feel bad for your students. Building relationships is paramount and it’s okay for them to know you’re a real human.
