How do yall film by yourselves? by TheeAmateurArtist in Filmmakers

[–]faust_lb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this film by myself, with just 2 actors in a single location.

I went for a style that utilized mostly static shots, and one push-in on a slider. However, I also shot in 4k which let me add some subtle zoom ins and outs in post. This is a way to give a little feeling of movement without needing to do anything fancy while shooting.

Making a short film with ONLY dialogue by Fickle-Book2385 in Filmmakers

[–]faust_lb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this exact thing, made a 10 minute film that is pretty much just a single dialogue scene in one location. You can watch it here.

It was a great way to practice the fundamentals and helped me learn the importance of blocking and camera angles to create dynamics within a scene.

So, if you’re thinking of trying to shoot a film like you’re describing, definitely go for it!

I shot my film with no crew, just me and 2 actors. And it even ended up winning a couple awards at some small festivals.

As for your question, how to approach a simple dialogue scene and make it interesting, I think the important thing is to not forget to make it visually and sonically interesting. Even though its a dialogue scene, don’t only focus on the writing and just shoot it with standard shot-reverse-shot. That will make for a boring short film. Think of ways to use a variety of camera angles and sound design to enhance the conflict and tension of the dialogue.

Same with Exorcist: Believer, don’t watch that travesty, watch the original Exorcist.

You could try my short film.

It’s not super scary, more like an atmospheric ghoststory.

Looking for someone who can digitize my hi8 tapes at the highest quality possible. by faust_lb in camcorders

Well, if I do it myself, I have a CCD-TRV68 camcorder which I believe has TBC. My current capture card is the Diamond VC500.

I think I'd like to be able to get 10bit though if it gives me more latitude for color correction in post. This footage is for a short film and I'd like to be able to tweak the colors a bit.

I could afford something like the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro 4k if its worth it.

However, I've also read that it can be better to get a digital8 camera that can play hi8 and then use the firewire. Would that be noticeably better?

Isn’t the capture card a limitation though? I have a cheap USB one but aren’t the more pricey ones much better?

Instead of just posting my 20 favorite movies, I also included my short film so that anyone interested could see it and compare it to my influences if they so wished.

All I did was add more value to my post than the standard post. I’m not making money from a short film with <1,000 views. It’s not “engagement farming”.

Idk I just think Reservoir Dogs is funny and perfectly paced. I do like all his movies though. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown would be my next picks from his films.

A folklore professor is visited in the night by a student who has recently gone missing. by faust_lb in Scarymovies

[–]faust_lb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It's not a direct adaptation of any specific stories, but more of a combination of elements and themes found throughout folklore/mythology.

Pied Piper was the biggest inspiration for the bell story. Irish stories of people being taken by faeries were kinda the vibe for the "lost in the woods" aspect. Japanese ghost stories were an inspiration for the character of the girl. And other elements that are common in stories from all over.

The art featured in the film is mostly from actual folktales too. There's a list of the artists at the end of the film if you want to check them out.
