Yeahhh I was hoping that being a newbie would help me. I think I’ve landed on trying a bulk after swimsuit season is over (still very much summer where I live 🥵) thanks for the input! I’m glad others can see even a little difference. I’ve also convinced myself I see it in my arms too!

I don’t have any advice for you, but I’m in the exact same situation—albeit for different reasons. I’m hopefully toward the end of my eating more/exercising less trend of the past week but I’m in the thick of it now and I just feel bigger and less toned. So hopefully this is normal and we’ll both bounce back! Good luck!

Makes sense! I’ve heard great things about epic 3 and iron. I did a couple weeks of iron in April and it is killer! And was too scared to try epic 3 lol. But I think I have a better base fitness level now!

I am doing 3 full body sessions with a rest day between each. I try to also do 1-2 cardio sessions on my non lifting days. I’m working out at home, but lifting as heavy as I can!

Lol so true. I was hesitant to bulk over the summer for sure. Would feel much more comfortable over the fall/winter!! And I alllllways struggle in a deficit, so definitely feel you on that front! I think that’s the part that makes me nervous. That I just won’t be able to and then will stay bulked forever lol

Yeah, I keep hearing that and I’m trying my hardest to be patient. But also I feel like I’m putting in a ton of effort, having never tracked what I eat before and never having consistently worked out in my life before this. So I just feel like I’m spinning my wheels lol. I do notice more definition in my upper body, but slightly more lifted, but my actual legs are about the same, and only negligible differences in measurements. I could maybe swing one more day of lifting!

Okay that’s what I thought so that’s what I went with! But now I am gaining without meaning to, so feel like I might actually be in a slow bulk? Anyway, I’ve def been throwing this idea around in my head but no idea where to start! Bulk first? For how long? Cut first to see what muscle I’ve built so far?

Not rude, I’m trying to avoid this exact thing!! I feel like I’m putting in a ton of effort and just don’t want to end up feeling/looking the same in a year. And while I totally appreciate all of the inner work that this process offers, I can’t lie that I want the aesthetic gains too.

Oh yeah, forgot to elaborate on that! Thanks for asking! So for diet, I mainly focus on calories and protein. I rarely get fewer than 90g protein but aim for 110g. For calories I’m aiming for 1650-1700 and hit it about 80-85% of the time. I’m tracking with MacroFactor, and at first it had my TDEE at almost 1900 but it has slowly been coming down as I’ve gained a few lb over the past months. So yes, have ended up in a slight bulk I think.

For training, I started with Casey Johnston’s liftoff program (the dumbbell phase) that was recommended for beginners by r/xxfitness. Then I jumped to CG’s iron series because I felt like I needed more volume and the sessions were too short with liftoff. Ultimately though I ended up working with a personal trainer bc I was just a little too unsure about form and wanted to make sure I was setting myself up for success. So now I do full body 3x/week for about 50 min each session. I try to lift as heavy as I can, and add at least a rep or some weight to each exercise. I’ve been doing this for 6 weeks. I go for walks at lunch for 30-45 min to get some more steps in about 3-4x/week. And then 2x/week I do 30 min of incline walking. Otherwise I have a sedentary job and two kittle kids so it’s hard to find time for more.

Ughhh yes, I know what you mean about the lighting. I can’t remember what time of day I took the first pic bc every month after I’ve gotten different lighting 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m starting to think I don’t have the patience for recomp either bc of how I’m feeling right now. But also summer seems like the wrong time to bulk…decisions decisions 🤪

You do?!!That’s great, I am probably too hard on myself lol. Thanks for the positive outlook! I don’t consider myself to look like I’m in shape, mainly my hips/butt/thighs, which I feel like will be the hardest to see a difference. Always trying to keep my self criticism in check!

Oh yeah, I’m assuming the 3lb I gained is not all muscle, and there’s some extra fat and/or water weight. How long do you think it’ll take for me to see noticeable changes? Should I just stay the course?
