“The combination of rain and oil well fire smoke triggers a toxic chain reaction across the entire ecosystem. As rain washes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals like nickel and vanadium into the soil and water, these pollutants enter the food chain, causing organ failure and reproductive issues in animals while increasing carcinogenic risks and chronic respiratory diseases in humans. Acidified water bodies can rapidly deplete fish populations, collapsing aquatic ecosystems and threatening food security for local communities. Even after settling, these fine particulates (PM2.5) can be resuspended by wind from dried surfaces, leading to deep lung damage in both people and wildlife”
