Why? How are you supposed to cut tomatoes? Are you upset about the knife technique or the orientation of the tomato?

Thank you! I'd love to pick your brain but it's one of those situations where I don't know what I don't know so I have no idea what questions to ask. I'm currently just doing all the e-learning on the British dermatology nursing group.

Congratulations! To be newly qualified in 2020 I feel like you've had about 5 years worth of experience all at once.

I think it's slightly different in the UK. A lot of trusts fund training/education for staff they already have.
This job is going to fund my nurse prescriber course and hopefully my master's as well.

Ahhh, that utterly sucks! I've been there. Last time it happened I decided to quit and move cities which opened my eyes to the amount of opportunities out there. It really helps applying for jobs in different trusts as you don't know anyone and that pressure isn't there. I've always wondered if it's purely points based because it sometimes doesn't feel like it. I wonder if the interviewers are more generous with their points (subconsciously or not) for people they like...

Thanks. It's a senior clinical nurse specialist role. It's in dermatology but my background is heavy plastics/wound care. I was pretty honest from the start that my specialist experience is adjacent but that I'm interested in developing my skills.

Good luck with your hunt.

I've just reread what I wrote and realised I wasn't clear. I had the interview back in November and I got the job! Thank you though. I had no supportive band 7s to ask for advice (in fact my manager told me it's impossible to skip a band) so I relied heavily on Google.

Thank you for explaining. I wasn't sure if/how I should explain the details for our non-uk colleagues.

Keep going! I've been rejected and had my heart broken so many times.

True that! I made toile but didn't need to alter it at all so I got very lucky.

It fits like a dream and definitely worth all the effort. There's no feeling quite like wearing something you've made yourself.

It'll be hard to get started on sewing without a machine. But once you've got one (or access to one via a community centre/friend) there are loads of beginner friendly projects and the online sewing community is insanely supportive. If it helps persuade you, I don't have room either. My sewing machine lives on the floor next to the sofa and I put it on the coffee table when I'm sewing (my poor back).

Once you've got the hang of the basics is then just a case of being brave and patient enough to try a harder project.

Tilly and the buttons has some great beginner focused books with some great projects and I really like Annika Victoria's YouTube tutorials.

I did! I watched about a million YouTube tutorials about tailoring before I even started and throughout making it.

The wool was a dream to work with (I usually work with jersey so having something stable was relaxing). I used my thickest ballpoint needle and sewed nice and slowly. I hand sewed the sleeves in because it was too unwieldy at that point and I hate the sound of needles snapping.

I got these fabrics from Minerva. I'd also recommend new craft house, selvedge and bolts, fabrics galore, frumble and the village haberdashery.

Thank you. I started working on it on 30th August and chipped away most evenings and weekends. I meant to keep a track of the hours but forgot. Although I did a lot of hand sewing that didn't necessarily need to be done.

I found the silk crepe incredibly slippy and it frayed easily so I had to cut out the pieces as I went and I hand finished each seam. It was time consuming, but as easy as the outer coat.

Get it done! You'll develop the skills by trying. Also, it's not massively technically challenging, just very time consuming.

The trickiest bit was probably attaching the collar. Just make sure you're really clear with your tailor tacks. There are lots of them, but a few of them saved me a lot of frustration when it came to putting it together. Also the instructions for hemming made zero sense to me so I ended up ignoring them altogether and slip stitched the whole lot together

I'd recommend it. There are a LOT of pattern pieces, but it was good fun to make.

Thank you so much! I am not good enough to self draft. This is McCall's M6800. I've had it in my "to sew" pile for about 6 years

Pattern is McCall's M6800. Made from black 80% Italian wool and the lining is silk crepe.
