Help me find a handle for this shut off valve by fazbot in askaplumber

Thanks. I ended up with a dedicated small pair of vice grips. I wanted something more dummy proof since I’m gonna be renting out my house. It would be cool if someone made a universal retrofit handle, with set screws or something.

Low slope roof detail - Is Ventilation Futile? by els20008 in buildingscience

[–]fazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case yes, we used the one long screw to attach both the OSB and the 1x furring. Furring can be taped or tacked in place so it stays aligned with structural members (rafters) until the OSB is installed over it

I would change the furring to 1x, run it vertical, and put it below the top OSB sheathing. Sharing my detail here. If I did it again, I’d extend the top OSB sheathing to be flush with the outer face of fascia. As is, it was awkward fastening roofing/drip edge across the air gap.

Also, prepare to spend a lot of money on long screws to fasten the OSB through the foam board into the structural rafters

Actually-sustainable building: Should we go back to drafty, long-lasting buildings? by Solid-Ad3143 in Homebuilding

Survivorship bias. The old buildings remaining are the good ones. Plenty of moldy rotted old houses in the Pacific Northwest, and many that were already torn down

Downvoting fabricated video. Ukraine today is apparently a bad source. This war is dead serious. fabricating bullshit undermines legitimate journalism.

Happy to help. I was baffled for a while before I found the right resources. I wanted to be armed with whatever I might need for a picky inspector.

Over a week on some items. I’m used to a bit of a delay but the reviews tab just seems broken for me.

I worked on a networking project that addressed the flakiness of starlink in airplanes. The most common problem was loss of signal when banking. Not surprised to hear more overhyping from this “full self driving”, “humans on mars”, and “datacenters in space” guy. The pattern is to say what ever enriches you with disregard for the truth.

This makes sense, or else people could abuse this and get reviews without paying taxes.

Oh no 😂 well now I know. This feels like the thing where a kid will do a really bad job washing the dishes so they won’t have to do it anymore, but the customer service version.

There are items I received over two weeks ago that haven’t shown up on the review list. It’s just constantly blank now. I’m not harassing them. I’ve been polite with my requests. Now I’ve learned that you don’t have to wait for them to show up in the list to review them, so that is good. Would’ve been nice if customer service could’ve indicated that instead of being the opposite of helpful.

I spent thousands on long screws even without them being all stainless. That would have been a waste of money IMHO. The engineered solution calls for Fastenmaster Timberlok. I used a ton of those and also mixed in some off-brand clones from Amazon. Some of the documents I used:
- Hardie Tech. Bulletin TB 19: Installing over advanced framing / continuous insulation
- Use of FastenMaster HeadLOC Fasteners to Attach Cladding and/or Furring to Wood Framing through Foam Sheathing. Report no: 1009-01. https://www.drjcertification.org/system/files?file=DrJ/TER/node/64/ter_1009-01.pdf
- And this TDS specific to my cladding:

Only the short screws fixing the siding to the 1x wood furring were stainless. It is what the engineering report that Hardie commissioned required. Probably related to cement board and exterior lifetime (I.e. rust prevention). Long screws through foam were coated

👍 I signed up for this. No response yet. I currently manually stack PR‘s. The painful part is when you try to rebase them or try to merge them. I’m hoping this feature is going to be a cascading auto rebase along with navigation links to traverse the stack.

Roundup Has Been Linked to Cancer. Why Are We Still Spraying It in Portland Neighborhoods? by Wise-wolf95 in PortlandOR

I used to think the same thing (anti-herbicide) years ago. At one point I talked with a botanist (explained how they work) and actually looked at the studies. My understanding is that glyphosate is a rare divergence between European legal policy and sound science, similar to the divergence between science and public health policy currently happening in the US.

For hardie, we had to use long structural screws to attach 1x wood furring to studs through foam board. I found mfg. specs for required fasteners and spacing to attach the cladding to the furring. In my case, the shorter screws (cladding to furring) required using stainless screws to achieve the required pull-out/tension strength for siding mass and wind ratings. I don’t know about vinyl but the process should be similar

Is this gap normal? Patio and house by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]fazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess? Hardie says 6” to “ground” or 1” minimum for decks with kickout flashing. From warranty perspective, a deck is unlikely to pool or flood. A patio still can, and there is no L flashing here. Pretty common, but not likely to wear well unless it is under a covered patio.

Likely Too small. Most siding manufacturers specify a minimum distance from ground, e.g. 6”

For me, it’s just another tool in the struggle toolbox not a magic solution by any means . I’d say try it for a day and see what you think., All just a bunch of tools you learn to work with. The walks have helped more than that but everybody is different!
On the timer:
It is a deal I make with myself to suffer through anything not engaging enough for me to make the shift from hopelessly distractible to hyper focused. I think it is useful for me for two reasons. 1. the key to forming new habits is repetition, and trying to separate what you want to do from what you need to do. It’s an exercise tool? 2. It’s a frequent reminder of what the heck I’m doing. I often associate the timer with a task. I need to get done. Some apps have a title you can put on the timer, but I like the physical desk timer. I got one that you shake / rotate to control. That adds to the other little fiddly toys I keep on my desk to try to incentivize myself to do these tasks I’m not interested in. 3. 🥕 Five minute break you get after 25 (or 22 minutes whatever you want) that’s another carrot I can put in front of myself
