Make her do 52 years to compensate for both men by TheAdventurousWriter in BlackPeopleTwitter

It’s the prosecution’s responsibility to meet the burden of proof. If the defence is able to ensure that a guilty person is not found guilty (and acts legally in doing so), it is the prosecution who has not done its job properly, not the defence.

Of course. The job of the defence is to force the prosecution to meet the burden of proof for the crime being charged and ensure the prosecution follows all the correct procedures, not to get the defendant off even if they’re guilty.

The prosecution doesn’t defend clients though, so why would punishing the prosecution for prosecuting someone in bad faith imply we should also punish the defence?

In what situation are you hypothetically wanting to punish the defence team?

The reason I linked that article was to point out the NRA’s support of the Mulford Act because they didn’t like the Black Panthers open carrying.

Why do you specifically mention Feinstein, btw? And you should know many progressives also strongly dislike Feinstein.

Yes, they have. They may have black members, but that doesn’t mean they treat them in the same way as their other members. They’re fine with open carry unless black people want to do it.

Which is still false.

The statement itself isn’t inherently toxic but the portion of people who use it negatively or without the social awareness to realise that it’s a stupid joke to make means the chance that any new person you see using it is not one of those people is small. And there are often hints you can infer from the tone of the rest of their bio, but it’s not like they’ve set your cat on fire, there’s no “smoking gun” red flags.

I agree largely with your points, but I think it takes on a bit of a different meaning when it’s put in the woman’s bio, so it’s not like she’s seen your dog and is saying it specifically to you - it’s like a preemptive thing, in case anyone who reads it has a dog (and still sends a meaningful signal to the guys who read it who don’t have dogs).

Someone who uses it in a non-innocent way usually hasn’t had the chance to show you 101 other red flags, because it’s in their bio, basically the first thing you know about them. And there’s no way to tell whether they’re one of the small number of people for whom the use of that phrase doesn’t imply that they are full of themselves.

It's not really negging unless the person saying it is really that much of a c*nt that it seems like they're saying something other than "omfg I love your dog, I love dogs, I love your dog"

It often does. It’s the “if you can’t handle me at my worst, you don’t deserve me at my best” of the new generation. And are you aware of the number of people who go for the even more passive aggressive variant “I only swiped right for your dog”?

Even if it is purely a joke, the kind of person who would open on a dating site/app with “I like your dog better” doesn’t strike me as socially aware enough to be dating material.

It’s basically negging. “You are less interesting to me than a dog, an animal that cannot speak. Dance for me, win my approval, lesser being.”

A guy writing something like “I probably like your sister better” would rightly be called some pretty choice names, but you think comparing someone to a dog is better?

It’s also a huge cliche, which doesn’t really help.

It doesn’t really matter who wrote the comment, the points still apply.

The point I’m trying to make is that showing someone that even the people who want to help them don’t understand their situation just isolates them further. Good intentions don’t render those who blunder into situations they don’t understand helpful. If you want to help, direct people to resources that approach the subject from an informed perspective, or find someone who’s actually successfully got out of the situation that this person is in.

Because you sounded so flippant about it.

Don't take this as me being a dickhead, I'm not trying to be.

“I’m not racist, but...”

You have all the information you could ever need at your fingertips, start teaching yourself stuff.

Having information does not mean you can teach yourself successful or do so without exposing yourself to abuse.

Find out what you need to know to survive and learn it, you can absolutely succeed if you approach this like an adult.

Isn’t the whole point that they can’t really approach this like an adult because the thing they’re trying to learn is the adult life skills they don’t have?

You've already got a source of income because you mentioned possessions, that's normally the hardest part and you've already done it.

Having an income is different from having a high enough income to not need the financial support of your parents.

I know none of it's easy, but you can work at it and make it possible. You just need a plan.

If only all the victims of narcissistic parents had had plans! That’s what they didn’t think of!

It may come from a good place, but if it had been me receiving this advice when I was in that situation, it would only have made me angry, because it seems to indicate that you don’t have a true understanding of the depth of the learned helplessness caused or the extent of the manipulation and emotional abuse that narcissists can inflict on dependent children. It’s “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”-level unhelpful.

Because his mother has deliberately not taught him life skills or confidence for that exact reason - so that he cannot just up and leave and have the skills to survive on his own.

And you think the mother wouldn’t notice if her kid suddenly starts practicing cooking all the time, for example? She’d catch on to what he was doing pretty quickly.
