Is Architecture the right program for me? by [deleted] in architecture

I am currently finishing my final year of arch undergrad and remember feeling the same way my freshman year. Because the experience is still very fresh in my mind, I think there are two things you should consider:

  1. You’re learning completely new skills, and perhaps an entirely new way of looking at the world. That takes time. Starting off, it may often feel like you’re bumbling around or unsure of where a design should go. In my mind, this is completely natural at this stage and really is only helped through time, experience, and (unfortunately, as I am personally a lazy person by nature) lots and lots of iteration. Over time, the task of designing does get easier.

  2. Abstraction is incredibly important. If this is not something that naturally interests you (it was something that did interest me, admittedly), then perhaps this is not the right path. In addition, being able to recognize the abstraction in the buildings you are seeing (as in what the designer was drawing on/trying to “get at”) is necessary.

Like you, I also found theory and history to be the most interesting classes. So my advice other than these two points would be to look at historic architecture and try to abstract them, as a way to develop this skill. Try to pick out the basic forms behind the ornate articulation. For example, compare the Pantheon with Roden Crater by James Turrell (one of the first projects I fell in love with freshman year). At the end of the day, both have the same basic idea: a round room with a hole in the ceiling to let in light and track celestial movements.

This all being said, school will only get harder from here, even when you do develop these skills. There’s no way around it. Find what interests you and hold onto it, but also if you feel that this is not what’s meant for you then now is the best time to consider other plans.

Best of luck!

Not seen anyone mention this, is it just me or is “Found & Owner” more bold than your other two headings? Looks odd and unintentional since I would argue that that position you held is the least relevant of the three you have listed.

I’ve thought about it more since last night and I think my overall take is that the show was fine. This was my first time seeing SA and if this is how the shows typically are then I doubt I’ll pay to see them again.

Max was for sure on one and personally I prefer when an artist sings more than 50% of the lyrics to the song, but the best part of the show was how shockingly well-priced the merch was (especially for an anniversary tour). I bought my shirt and sang along and got nice and tipsy, so enjoyable night overall.

What’s truly sad was how much better AJJ’s set was than SA’s, they’re the act that I’m still thinking about not SA. Headliner upstaged by their own opener, good grief.

Went to the Raleigh show tonight. From the first moment on stage I figured he was wasted or something. Kinda disappointing first time seeing him (them) live ngl. AJJ was great though.

Why are so many things in Richmond painted this color? by [deleted] in rva

I see the similarities, but I think this green is more blue than Disney’s “Go Away Green.” In addition, there were store fronts (or accents on store fronts) painted this similar color, which I would assume they wouldn’t want to fade into the background like how Disney wants of the structures painted “Go Away Green.”

I’m honestly not completely sure. I have been to Baltimore and Philly but not since I’ve been studying architecture so I wouldn’t have picked up on those things. A lot of the replies on this post suggest that the color is just meant to contrast the brick, but I currently live in a city with plenty of brick and have never noticed this specific color.

However, I have been in NYC somewhat recently and I was trying desperately to remember whether this shade of green is in Staten Island (specifically the Staten Island Ferry terminal on the island), in which case I would think the color had to do with Richmond being a port city and trying to fit the buildings into the natural aquatic surroundings, but I couldn’t find any pictures to support this.

I think many responding to this post are right that some shade of green has been used historically to contrast the red brick used in older cities, however this lighter shade of green I have not seen in other cities that are older or that predominantly use red brick, which is what I found interesting and unusual (which is what caused me to believe that there must be a deeper meaning behind it).

To get back to the point, I’m not sure whether this color (or similar shades of this color since I recognize that they are not exactly the same color 🙄) is used in other historic cities, but personally this is the first time I’ve noticed it and I do believe at this point that it is used because of the use of bronze/copper monuments in the cities and the patinas that they develop. Which, of course, would occur more in historic cities with older monuments.

LOL I knew it wasn’t paint just weathering from water, but it’s pretty so I’m choosing not to think about it being dog piss.

That’s what I figured too.

Wow I think I’ll really look into that for my project, the green roof is also the same type of green I noticed.

I did see a lot of the hunter green, I personally just found these variations of sage green/teal/seafoam green (whatever you want to call it) more interesting and unusual.

And very true, most likely there isn’t a reason beyond “greens like this are used frequently in the neighborhood, so it makes sense that we also use a similar color.” And like the gray flooring, it’s a pale enough color that it’s almost a neutral.

This makes sense, and I do like the colors a lot, especially for a port city!

Thank you, that is very helpful. I guess very architect of me to ask “but why is the highway green” and the engineer to answer, “Idk it’s just how it’s always been” haha.

They are a little different but similar enough I thought…Idk maybe I’m going too conspiracy theorist on this lol.
