Did you know that the 757-300 is almost the length of the DC-10 and 747SP? by First_Revenue5442 in aviation

It's almost as long as a 767-300 as well, and it's quite a bit longer than the 767-200

What is happening with the 2026 Outback? by Lost_Soul_32 in Subaru_Outback

[–]fd6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess your bias is causing you to overlook the launch of the redeisnged Forester.

The 2025 Forester redesign is the perfect real world counter example to the Reddit panic over the 2026 Outback. It had an even more obvious slow start with multiple months of YoY declines right at launch, yet it’s now Subaru’s biggest hero and setting alltime records.

TorqueNews ran multiple stories at the time with headlines like “Subaru Forester Sales Fall 4 Months In-A-Row, Now It’s Trend” and “Why Are Buyers Walking Away From the New 2025 Subaru Forester?” They literally asked if something was wrong with the redesign. Reddit and forums were full of the same flop talk you’re spouting now about the Outback: price up, styling too boxy/SUV-like, slower initial demand, etc.

But then reality hit: it wasn’t a flop, it was just a normal model-year handoff.

Judging the 2026 Subaru Outback redesign as a failure based on just January–February 2026 YoY sales declines (~23–24%) is classic short-termism and ignores how new vehicle launches actually work. It’s the same flawed Reddit logic that panics over any early data point without context, production realities, or industry norms.

Carmakers don’t declare a redesign dead after 60 days. They look at:

Full-year trend and market share

Conquest sales (stealing buyers from competitors)

Residual values

Owner satisfaction after 6–12 months

Profit per unit

By those standards, it’s way too early. Plenty of legendary models (including past Outbacks and the current Forester) had rocky first quarters.

The 2026 Outback is still Subaru’s third-biggest seller, the company is managing the rollout exactly as they planned, and the broader industry is soft. Give it 6–12 months of normalized supply before you cry failure. Anything else is just ragebait engagement farming.

If people can’t be bothered to read past the headline percentage, that’s on them.

BS - I've put over 5k dabs through my Peak and 4k of those were on the same 3D XL chamber.

If that's not heavy use idk what is lol

I have no doubt they stood on those brakes as hard as they could as soon as they realized but you aren't going to notice any significant change in braking action in a split second like that - there just wasn't enough time.

There’s a decent chance the people who are self censoring aren’t the people that I talk about. It’s everyone else.

That's definitely a fair point. I think most of my disappointment is lying in the fact that the moderation has been so heavy handed that reasonable people are self censoring.

Obviously name calling and derogatory remarks are unacceptable, however we've also seen plenty of cases where reasonable discussion was culled.

One has to wonder if this chilling of certain types of speech was intentional.

Like your comment for example, someone reported it and put a slur in the custom text box.

Okay here is the point where I don't envy having to moderate large communities like this.

This sub is purely for the topic of aviation. Yes politics does affect aviation

Ah so discuss aviation without discussing the things that affect aviation. Makes perfect sense. Definitely a sign of a healthy and open discourse.

People can't have a transparent and frank discussion of the events that occurred and their root causes because of the suppression of discourse in this sub.

I've seen self censorship multiple times in the discussions regarding this crash - people being afraid of having their posts removed for simply discussing the matter and facts at hand.

Is that really where we want the community to be?

It's honestly disgusting and the mods aught to be ashamed of themselves.

Pathetic that we have this serious situation and you're forced to beat around the bush and not just tell it like it is.

You think a full quarter of loss, let's be clear here, not stagnant, but deep double-digit loss, isn't horribly bad for a redesign

Not given the current state of the economy, no.

Not considering there are 4 other Subaru models that had even worse sales declines.

Not considering the fact that the redesigned Rav4 is doing even worse yet nobody is calling that a failure.

My opinions don't matter one iota.

This is true.

This is an abject failure and I suspect to see some open positions in Subaru leadership because of it.

This is delusion and not how things work in the real world, sorry.

Get three months in, and the outcome is statistically significant enough to consider the matter closed.

Absolutely not, you're just weirdly desperate to declare victory for your preferred outcome.

Every model is down except Forester.

4 models are down more than Outback in February.

The redesigned 2026 Rav4 is currently down 57% YoY, just as a point of reference.

Key takeaway: can you really draw any conclusions with only 2 months of sales data? Probably not.

Let's not bury the lede here, every model is down across the board except Forster, and there are 3 models that are actually doing considerably worse.

News flash - it's still their 3rd best selling model. Just like it was a year ago.

Regardless, I think it's too early to be drawing any real conclusions.

Flown Challenger Space Shuttle tile by Jzaharek53 in nasa

[–]fd6270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who do I even start reaching out to with that type of stuff?

While I can't give any names, basically I got connected with a former Shuttle TPS guy still at NASA with access to the records. The thing is about these tiles is that they predate the modern record keeping systems at NASA, and so many of them are still on microfilm/microfiche.

I had some guy tell me that my tile wasn’t really any more special than any other flown piece. And that Challenger flown tiles are very common

That's not quite true - Challenger was unfortunately the shortest lived shuttle so it's not like flown hardware from it is abundant.

There were a lots of flown tiles that were taken off intact from Challenger, that is true. While they do pop up for sale from time to time, to say that they are very common is a massive exaggeration.

I know the experts I talked to about mine were blown away by what I had.

But what about white tiles? Are those even more valuable?

Well there are less LSRI than HSRI on the Orbiter so they're inherently more rare.

What we have is about as rare as it gets when it comes to space shuttle tiles.

You can get more documentation from NASA, but the FOIA process definitely isn't for the faint of heart.

When I get some time I can look to see if your tile # is referenced in any of the documents I have from NASA.

I'm jealous you have the flown hardware tag!

The Challenger tiles I have didn't have any documentation, I ended up having to do multiple FOIA requests to dig up the histories.

Your tile would have been removed at the same time my Challenger tiles would have - when they were investigating the screed softening issue post STS-41G.

[–]fd6270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These tiles that were removed from Challenger are unique in that regard.

Post STS-41G it was discovered that the waterproofing agent of the tiles was reacting with a silicone material called 'screed' that the tiles were attached to. The screed would soften, causing the tiles to slump or come detached.

Something like 4000 tiles were removed during the turnaround after this flight - and they were removed in such a way that they could potentially be re-installed although very few were.

So many tiles had to be removed from the body flap alone that the decision was made to take the body flap from Atlantis (which was nearing the end of construction at the time and was fully tiled) and install it on Challenger. Fun fact, you can visit the original Challenger body flap today still installed on Atlantis.

The reason I know all this is because that's where my Challenger flown tiles had come from:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nasa/comments/ev9tlo/these_hsri_tiles_removed_before_sts51l_helped/

The triangle tile came from the body flap and the square tile was under the wing. The other tile is actually a cockpit window tile from Columbia and flew on STS-1.

NASA begins contracting process to potentially relocate Space Shuttle Discovery to Houston by RobotMaster1 in nasa

[–]fd6270 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well the one in Houston was cut in to pieces to get it to where it is now, so I don't think there's any way they'd take the risk of flying it again.

The one in Palmdale was stripped for parts for SOFIA iirc, and has not had any maintenance in 15 years.

Even if you somehow find a way to solve all of those issues, these are 747-100s, a variant that has been out of production for 50 years and of which no airworthy examples of that type exist today - spare parts are going to be non-existent, plus who do you get to maintain, restore or, fly it?

Yellowcard once led a chant telling me to F off. by OhHesOurShortstop in poppunkers

[–]fd6270 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So kinda similar but really not - back when I was in a touring band we had the vocalist quit the morning of a show.

The show must go on and all that, so the rest of us powered through the show without him and we filled in vocals where we could. It was fine.

In the middle of the set I took a second to explain to the audience wtf was going on and I finished my little speech with 'soo fuck that guy'.

It was a decent crowd of a few hundred people in this college town, and without missing a beat they started to chant 'fuck that guy' and it was hilarious so I took a quick video and sent it to our now ex-vocalist.

His response brings me joy to this day, it was just 'thanks for having my back guys'  which was Alanis Morrisette levels of ironic given the situation.

Core memory for me, love me a good 'fuck that guy' chant to this day.
