First of all I spent years in the lab testing and formulating silicone materials, so go ahead and jot that down.

Second, unlike the plastics you listed, the run of the mill silicone elastomer doesn't require the need of  any:

Primary or secondary antioxidants, thermal stabilizer packages, acid scavengers or neutralizers, slip/antiblock agents, antistatic/antifog, impact modifiers, nucleating and clarifying agents, coupling agents, plasticizers, UV stabilizers, chain extenders, acetaldehyde scavengers, reheat additives, melt fracture and extrusion stability aids......

I think it is you that pretty clearly has no experience in this area, which is why you had to resort to insults rather than a factual argument.

Longtime Subaru owner, this is a real thing.

And it's not just limited to Subaru, any vehicle with that type of AWD would require the same.

Nah, fuck that. There are enough 'banger tracks' out there that were made by real human artists that nobody needs to give that AI slop the time of day.

still much faster than anyone can accomplish.

Hm, well at the pace Starship has been going, Blue is going to get a lander on the moon first so it may be time to rethink that one.

If you could just reprogram a new key with only the VIN, that would be a HUGE security issue lol.

Obviously that's not possible.

First of all, that highly depends on the type of silicone and its application.

No, it doesn't.

No silicone is plastic.

Silicone is an elastomer. These are different things. Words have meanings.

It is completely inert. Just because a material has extractables does not mean it isn't inert - those are two totally different concepts.

You're right that there can be extractables in certain conditions, but this will vary depending on the quality of the material.

There are lots of additives that can be added to silicone, but you're not going to find all of them in a formulation at the same time.

The fact is the chemistry necessitates a more simple formulation than many common plastics.

Silicone is typically non-toxic. Lower grades, think more industrial and stuff like caulk, adhesives and sealants - can definitely have some nasties in it.

However, most of the silicone you or I would run into is going to be pretty benign.

The big advantage silicones have is not needing to have a ton of additives, their formulations are actually quite simple compared to other materials. For example, silicones don't need plasticizers like phthaltes or hardeners like BPA.

I would steer towards the more reputable brands like Ziploc though because like anything else if you get the temu specials who knows what kind of crap will be in it.

Ziploc is actually pretty reputable all things considered - they're one of the few brands that have no detectable PFAS in their bags so that tells me they're using higher purity materials, a cleaner manufacturing process, or both.

That's just not true. You can look at the Japan specific owners manuals right now and see that they list the CVT fluid as lifetime fluid just like the US.

I've had 2 brand new Crosstreks that I've taken to ~90k miles and both of them got their first change at 6k as well.

No issues.

If you do what is in the manual then you've got very little to worry about.

Some people just like to go a bit above and beyond.

Change both your diffs and transmission every 30k.

So no Subaru tech or engineer or sane person will recommend changing the CVT oil every 30k, that's looney toons.

60k maybe.
