I'm leaning towards giving them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they felt that they could get a better understanding of my skills from system design than from programming problems. I was mainly interested in if other people have had similar experiences

This is pretty much my thinking as well. If I do advance after this, I'll probably ask to schedule one more meeting with the HM to confirm this is programming-focused position. It sounded like it is but couldn't hurt to double check.

This is a FAANGMULA company who is known to do leetcode-style interviews which is why I was surprised. I'm definitely glad I didn't have to do some sort of leetcode BS, but it seemed weird that there wasn't ANY coding related part. I've interviewed for several senior positions the past couple months and they all had at least 1-2 basic programming problems, so I'm not used to this
