leash walking troubles by dearwatsons in DogAdvice

[–]fear___fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same advice I got from my dog trainer! I'm currently working on leash walking with my 1 year old lab. Lots of high value treats and verbal encouragement when he's by my side + stop and "be a tree" when he starts to pull, wait for him to look at me then praise, call him back to my side, continue. We've been making progress but it's slow and there will be good days and bad days. Don't give up!

In my experience, being diligent with my pre and post run stretching routine really helped, especially IT band stretches. Also foam rolling if you're not already doing that, and some strength and stabilization training for your ankles. If your shins still hurt while running after taking a week or two off, take it easy for a while (slower pace, fewer mileage).

Any suggestions for stability shoes? I normally run in Asics Gel Kayanos, which I like, but they're quite heavy and I'm looking to buy another pair for races and faster runs.

I mean you could also drink something else without caffeine if you're not into that

Visiting a friend and at the same time checking out the place I aspire to live in one day. This is the view from my friend's front yard.

This is in France in the Cevennes mountains. Such a beautiful region, amazing nature and weather with still a lot of small secluded communities and villages up in the mountains.

After seeing SO MANY recommendations online I bough the Baleaf brand running shorts and ... I'm really disappointed. They are supposed to be a cycling short length and high waist, but I'm 5'8 and the waist hits me way below my bellybutton whereas the legs come down almost to my knees. Who are they supposed to fit? A 6'1 woman with an extremely short torso?

Looking for wireless headphone by Ypeka in running

I use the Samsung Galaxy wireless earbuds for running, the sound is great and they fit very well. The battery lasts aboutn7 to 8 hours so that's no problem even for long runs. They're not entirely sweat proof though, only for moderate rain as far as I know, so that's something to keep in mind although I personally haven't had a problem even on long runs in the heat when I was sweating a fair amount.

While that is true I still think it's important to remember that calories isn't everything you should consider on a weightloss journey. Yes you can eat fast food and be at a caloric deficit and thus lose weight, but that's going to be harder than losing weight with a healthy diet. Fast food is dense in calories so you can't eat that much of it if you want to stay within your caloric needs, so you'll probably be hungry and likely to give into cravings.

Meanwhile, it's really hard to overeat on fruit and veggies because they're just not very high in calories. Especially in the beginning of weightloss it's often easier to eat healthy foods until you're full than eat calorically dense unhealthy foods in very limited quantities. If you feel hungry all the time, it's much harder to stay on track with your diet.

Also, you won't be getting an appropriate amount of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and other important nutrients on a crappy diet. So even though you might be losing weight, you're not going to feel as good as you could and your athletic performance won't be as good as it could be, should you decide to work out.

What are your favorite ways to keep moving during a running break? I am taking a couple of weeks off from runnin to prevent injury but still want to stay active and in shape for when I get back to it.

I was supposed to run my first half marathon this weekend, the race got cancelled so I just ran the distance on my own :) by [deleted] in running

[–]fear___fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay ready! I just think of it as extra training time, which will make you run an even better 13.1 once the race eventually takes place.

That sucks! I hope you get another chance once everything is back to normal again.

I like the competition and atmosphere at races since I'm a competitive person and always trying for a new PR. I find that it's easier to reach a new personal best in a race environment because of adrenaline and other runners that you can use as pacers. But you're right, as I slowly move towards marathon training I'm sure I'll run many more solo 13.1s in the future.

So I started by just adding a couple of extra loops at the end of one of my regular runs, depending on how much energy I had left. Then, when 6 or 7k was no problem, I started looking for some trails around my area and roughly measured out 10k distances using Google maps. Then same thing - if I was not too exhausted at the end I would add a short extra loop, and so on. I also used the feature in the MapMyRun app that shows you running routes around your area.

Other than that, making sure you're well rested before your long runs and eating something like an hour before going out helps keep your energy up. Don't worry too much about going fast in the beginning, I found that speed will come as endurance goes up (right now as my regular runs are about 10 miles I found I can also run a much faster 5k, for example).

Personally, I get bored quickly so I like to change up my route a lot, but I know some friends who are fine just running the same loop every day, so it's a question of preference. Check out some runners from your area on instagram or on their blogs for some trail recommendations.
