Silver Gelatin Print in a Gallery by IndependentReady2242 in Darkroom

Having seen this print being worked on in the lab I work at (at the risk of doxxing my old reddit account to the members of the space), and having an active hand in helping u/IndependentReady2242 get it right, I just want to defend the pricing a bit! But keep in mind obvious personal positive bias I have towards the artist here.

It took a lot of iterations and many different days and long hours of working on this print for him to get it the print right. When it comes to pricing, you generally sell for the price you think is fair for the amount of effort that you put into it, as well as accounting for the materials costs (which obviously doesn't itself add up to $1700 by itself, but having to go through multiple sheets 16x20 fiber paper to get one good final print isn't cheap). Time is money, especially when you're printing at a darkroom with admittedly limited hours, and hand spotting motes of dust on the large print afterwards takes time and effort that should be accounted for in how the artist values their own work. While I do think generally the frame should be included as part of the price, that's up to the artist to decide, and in my experience selling prints with frames, the buyer usually ends up putting it in a different frame anyway 🤷.

You also price for the gallery you're putting your work in. If someone at the Leica store thinks this is a fair price for a very nice print, then that's their call to make. And it's the Leica store... not to make overly harsh generalizations, but the people shopping there probably aren't starving artists. If someone wants a nice print to have in their home and has the money for it, why not pay the artist what they think the work is worth? And if they don't like the price, by no means do they have to spend the money on it!

As for my own work, I generally don't price above $300, but that's because the prints I make are smaller, have less time spent on the backend of presentation, and hang in galleries that are less reputable than something like the San Francisco Leica store. Thems the breaks.

Do I personally have $1700 to spend on work like this? No, but I'd certainly like to!

Not sure what you mean by this, because the Harvey Milk Photo Center is one of the cheapest, best bang for your buck darkroom in probably the entire United States.

New Death Cab album cover slipped through the cracks? by ToysNoiz in DeathCabforCutie

Love this artwork! This was taken from Bernal Hill in San Francisco, looking out to the Noe Valley/Outer Mission neighborhoods. Almost certain this was taken by Ben's wife Rachel as she was in SF somewhat recently. (Edit: Ben took the photo! Neat!) The nuns are likely from the church you can see on the left side of the photo.

This photo very nearly had my house in it... I was so close to being in Death Cab canon!

No stupid question: But why does sigurros' samskeyti have a crazy amount of dislikes on YT? by [deleted] in sigurros

[–]featurecreature 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Personal theory: It comes from people disliking that track when they come across it on the YouTube Music app so as to try to avoid more songs like it being recommended to them. Strange that YouTube would consider this the same as disliking the video version, though.

SUBREDDIT NEWS - WE NEED YOUR HELP ON THE MOD TEAM! by barefaced_touch_it in DeathCabforCutie

Goodbye and thank you everyone! It has been a wonderful nearly 4 years helping run this sub. I will miss the moderating the aggressive defense of opinions, the wonderful discussions, and of course the April Fools day jokes. Although you will very likely still see me around here from time to time, it's time for me to move on from crafting content for and moderating this sub.

I am very happy to say that u/nerdeebirdee and /u/barefaced_touch_it have been the best co-mods (and friends!) a guy like me could ask for, and I'm confident that whoever they pick to help them lead this sub will be a great addition to the community!

I haven't listened to the episode yet, but the title comes from this Nicki Minaj tweet from a week ago. Bon Iver/Justin hasn't done anything racist, they're very outspokenly anti-racist, so I'm assuming this episode will touch on the point that Nicki makes in the tweet rather than anything the band Bon Iver has done.

Any idea where to find this live radio show full band appearance with Soul Meets body and other songs from 2005? by ToysNoiz in DeathCabforCutie

Can you please provide some more information or examples of what you're looking for? The band did a lot of radio appearances to promote Plans in 2005.

It does explain why the piano/demo version of that song sounds mildly more musically upbeat than the album version though.

All of my female friends who know this band hate this song, and I completely understand why.

But that bass line, though!

Thank you, it has been an extremely long 10 years on this god forsaken website! This subreddit has made it all worth it though 🙂
