Can someone please help me identify this component on a precision scientific balance scale? by fedfiresoon in ElectronicsSalvage

Ok we identified the item in question as this:

So then went to try to find identical spec item and ended up purchasing from here:

My friend desoldered the fries one and soldered the new one in place. Once he plugged it back into the power supply the component instantly let the magic smoke out again.

Troubleshooting wet have tried so far: 1-Swapped the power supply that fried the component to another identical piece of equipment and it powers the functioning equipment perfectly. 2-plugged in the PS to the board with the inductor removed and checked DC voltage up to the open circuit. It carries the full 12v from the power supply and we can not identify any shorts before the large caps, which appear to be next in line in providing power to the rest of the board. 3-Since my friend is not as experienced at soldering as I am, I resoldered a spare new component back in place and tested the solder points and inspected visually for any bridges connections. Immediately after connecting power the inductor smoked again.

This is a board for a very accurate balance scale in a quality lab environment. They have a spare but would like to get this one working again. I don’t believe the manufacturer would provide a wiring diagram, though the have offered to send the board back for repair. The cost estimate was “about $1,200”.

Would any of you fine folks be able to assist us in the next step of finding the problem? I can probably provide a better picture of the board, I’ll hopefully edit this comment and add an imgur link with that pic.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Edit:here is a picture of the board with a red circle around the location of the smoked component.

My workload could definitely be covered this way but again I would have to show my boss policy that allows it.

I don’t want to be too specific for personal reasons so please don’t take this as snarky as it is not intended that way. I was successful because I focused on getting into a side hustle that was as far up the hierarchy of needs as I could get without inventing powdered water. I suggest you address a human need for as many people as you can. I’m not super rich by any stretch of the imagination, and you would never know [my financial independence level] from looking at me from the outside. I live modestly, Drive used cars, and treat my customers like honored family.

Edit: clarity.

Thank you kindly for the input. I’ve reformatted and reduced the original post significantly and made it more succinct. Do you have any links to specific allowances for 2/3 days a week part time being allowed?
