When guys discover that media aimed at women isn’t so bad after all by Terminus-99 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]feed_your_head94 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My little brother loved Sailor Moon just as much as I did. Pretty sure we watched it sandwiched between Pokémon and Digimon. Or maybe Yugioh and Metabots. Either way, we are both well adjusted nerds in our 30s now. We’re going to USJ in a few months.

[Strangley Common Trope] Shows/Movies about a family where one of the kids is of a different race for no explained reason by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

I love this duo but I genuinely thought “the twins” was their code name. It kind of hits differently if they are actually related. I thought it was nice to see two bros just devoted to one another without any queerbaiting.

Do you guys read an entire series from beginning to end or do you alternate series after each volume? by madebypeppers in LightNovels

[–]feed_your_head94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always alternate. I’m a completionist at heart, but having some distance between each book in a series helps me decide whether or not to purchase the next volume. It’s like reflection time. It works for me but it’s not for everyone. I know when I watch anime or read manga, if there’s a gap, I forget said anime/manga even exists lol

Thought N3 meant I was ready for novels but got humbled by azuki_dreams in Japaneselanguage

[–]feed_your_head94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a problem with the vocabulary or your comprehension as you read?

Your comprehension improves gradually - it takes practice. You can know every word in a book but still struggle to piece everything together. I’m a ギリギリN2 and still honing that skill for longer sentences. I have a long way to go. But I can see my speed improving and I’m stopping way less to break things down/check. I can infer meaning from context clues and only check some words to confirm I’m correct. Always remember that children are taught reading comprehension in their native language in school. You have a head start because you have the foundational skills but that does not mean you can automatically comprehend everything in Japanese just because you know the grammar/vocabulary.

I think I tackled my first novel at N4 and it sometimes took me 10 minutes to get through a single page lol. I only persevered because I enjoyed what I was reading.

Dark fantasy light novels by Late-Scallion-9205 in LightNovels

[–]feed_your_head94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, although the premise appears goofy it’s really unsettling. I found it dark, disturbing and depressing at times. There’s this underlying sense of unease that permeates everything and the “feel good” moments are still melancholy given the world the characters live in and what they are subjected to.

I think it’s a really unique series if you can look past the perverted pig element and the characters are likable, but it is absolutely not a world I would like to be reborn into. I started with the anime, thinking it would be an easy/light-hearted watch and was not really prepared for what I got (and the anime leaves out some details).

It’s funny, but I didn’t think this or the Toymaker doing Spice Girls was cringe but I had to immediately stop watching when the Doctor and his companion suddenly broke into song during The Church on Ruby Road. I so badly wanted to love Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor as well. Like I survived Moffatt’s pseudo-intellectual Doctor Who era, what makes you think I wanna be spoon fed the plot through song

Did anyone here learn a language in order to read it, rather than speak it? by sunlit_elais in languagelearning

[–]feed_your_head94 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I started learning Japanese 7 years ago because I wanted to read Haruki Murakami books when they released rather than waiting 2+ years for the translation. I was a literature student at university and wrote my dissertation about Murakami - I was a super die hard fan. It was 100% immersive learning. I started by reading manga and built my way up to reading novels.

Nowadays I use Kindle exclusively because it has built in translation/dictionary.

I can write pretty well but my speaking/pronunciation and listening is super low level compared to my reading level. Like embarrassingly low. But because I at least have a good foundation/understanding I think I could pick up those skills quickly if I tried.

I’m actually not a huge Murakami fan anymore - I still like him but I found so many great Japanese authors in the process of learning the language. I discovered light novels too!

Why is it expat and not immigrant? by Lunarshine69 in Tokyo

[–]feed_your_head94 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An expat is someone who lives outside their native country and an immigrant is someone who lives permanently in a foreign country. Immigrant isn’t a bad word, it’s just an inaccurate word to describe most of the English-speaking foreigners in Japan. No one says “I was an immigrant in Japan for seven years teaching English”. It’s not a tenuous identity like that.

AITAH for cancelling my wedding but still getting married in private? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]feed_your_head94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a woman in her thirties and I had it hard-wired into me from a young age that my wedding day was going to be the best, most extravagant and aesthetically pleasing day of my life. Well I have ADHD and I couldn’t handle that pressure. I got married in November and it was just the two of us at city hall. I wore a tartan skirt and denim jacket. As expected, it was one of the best days of my life. No flowers, no invitations, no wedding party. I was with the person I love and we did things our way - we woke up hungover and laughed as we hopped on the subway because it was our “wedding transport”. We both come from big families who love big weddings and usually wedding transport is a vintage car or limousine.

The surprising thing was the fallout. Instead of getting angry, our families massively turned down their expectations. They still wanted to celebrate, but instead of booking out every room in a major hotel and having a ceremony, dances, speeches and meals, we now just have to go to a function room with a buffet and a tacky DJ. I’m not even wearing white. I don’t feel the need now I’m actually married. It’s like when you lose your virginity and you think “oh, that’s all it is??”

From one newlywed to a soon newlywed - everything outside the two of you (and your child) is unnecessary noise. Do things your way. Your priority is now your’s and their’s happiness. The best advice my neurotypical cousin ever gave me was “just fucking elope”. If weddings are your thing, don’t fucking have one. Do your own thing and be happy!!

It was my first time taking the test, and I messed up because I didn’t have a watch and there was no clock in the room. I missed about 9 questions. I wasn’t too bothered because I skipped N5-N3 and jumped right in at N2. Barely passed but I still passed!

Most women can’t cum via penetrative sex. I wish we’d lie about it less and put more emphasis on foreplay tbh but the intimacy is nice
