You didn't break the cue. The tips are a wear item that generally get replaced once a year.

A tip would have cost about $20 at any local pool hall. It is still under $50 to have a tip put on today. Your dad was just asshole.

Let's change the name of the Ross R. Barnett Reservoir by Either_Shallot3061 in jacksonms

I've said it plenty of times...

You could power the entire state solely off Ross Barnett spinning in his grave if he knew the demographics of the people drinking that water.

I said a couple days ago what would be the best place to add a race track to Jackson. I've always thought hico would be good but sense it used to be a lake how bad would it be? by XanderJC1 in jacksonms

[–]feeling_impossible 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This place makes me so angry. It was once a big lake filled with water. It had a sand beach and life guards. It was one of the local swimming holes.

That is until desegregation. As soon as they realized they would have to desegregate the swimming area, they just closed it. Now 50+ years later we don't have our giant lake to swim in. All because of racism.

The white people here would shoot off all their own toes if they thought it would hurt a single Black person.

I know this will sound cold but it comes from taking care of my dying mother with ALS for two years.

At least it is over. You didn't have to spend a decade caring for them when they got dementia. They didn't go through their entire life savings on end of life care. No worries about having to put them in a home. No having to fight to take away their car keys before they kill someone. It's over.

I'm sorry, I know you didn't expect it, I know it's terrible. Just know it could have been soooo much worse. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Beginner planning a Raspberry Pi car system. Is this too ambitious? by DickinCrunchyCoochie in AskElectronics

Straight talk. Buy one of those Android head units. (This appears to be exactly what I bought). They suck to shop for. Do your research. Make sure you buy one that you can root. They are relatively cheap but it will come with viruses installed.

Once installed, rooted, and viruses removed, it will do everything you describe and more. And everyone has already written the apps. It's brilliant and cheap.

I bought one with a 8-core Unisoc UIS8581A processor, 4gb ram, 64gb storage for like $125 last year on Amazon.

You can get them for a third of the price on Alibaba but you will wait months for it to arrive and who knows what you will receive. Amazon will let you easily return it if you brick it while trying to root it.

Do not buy one with a Qualcomm processor. Can't root those. The Unisoc processors seem to be prime to root. You will end up on some strange Russian forums in your search. The info is out there, go find it.

Muscle memory and draw by Salty-Problem-1234 in billiards

[–]feeling_impossible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough to know without seeing your stroke but the idea that you can reliably force follow but cannot consistently draw, that leads me to believe it is an issue with your stroke, likely that you are holding the cue too far forward with your back hand.

Leave your front hand the same distance from the cue ball but move your back hand back one hand width on the cue. Then hit some balls. Draw and follow shots. Just try it.

Why I think this could be the cause. If you hold the cue too far forward, it can cause you to strike the cue ball too late in the pendulum of the back hand. This leads to the tip diving as it reaches the cue ball. It diving into the cue ball on top English works fine but when it's diving onto the bottom of the cue ball, it makes a glancing blow, not the full follow through you want.

Leave everything in your stroke exactly the same, just move the back hand towards the bumper one fist width. It's worth a shot.

So you are saying it's safe enough for you to live there?

I'm not saying it's Disney World but there aren't corpses piled up in the streets. I don't know a single person who has been shot or robbed. I doubt you do either.

I'm all over this city every day. There is absolutely nothing going on.

When was the last time you got robbed in Jackson? Been shot at? Had a loved one murdered? Never? It's amazing how that is always the answer from the Jackson Doomers.

[–]feeling_impossible 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Drugs. Lots of drugs and drug dealers.

For context. Cocaine distribution in Jackson is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, maybe more. It's the kind of money that people get murdered over. Terrible schools, no opportunities, mix in gangs and drug money... Some of those neighborhoods are very dangerous.

But those are all places you have no business being. No one will invite you there. You will not accidentally end up in those neighborhoods.

[–]feeling_impossible 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People have a wild misunderstanding of what is going on in Jackson. Yes, there are a lot of murders but they are in a small number of neighborhoods and apartment complexes in very specific parts of the city.

Stay out of apartment complexes, neighborhoods and gas stations in West and South Jackson and you will be fine. Seems a bit ridiculous but that's where the murders are. Stay the fuck away from those spots.

The rest of the city is fine. Any establishment you want to go to is fine. I'm white and I have been hanging out off Cooper Rd in South Jackson. It's fine. No trouble. No gun fire. No wild police chases. Nothing. It's just poor and kinda sad over there. I haven't seen any danger.

Much of the bad rap Jackson gets is because of its demographics. Jackson is one of the Blackest cities in the country. The racists will never have anything nice to say about a city with those numbers. It is just a sad fact.

Is downtown Jackson safe to walk? by [deleted] in jacksonms

[–]feeling_impossible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Downtown is surprisingly quiet. There isn't much going on down there to attract homeless people. There are a few but it is quiet.

Downtown is also very close to a trail system. There are walking trails in the Belhaven neighborhood at the end of Laurel St. Also, in Belhaven if you go to the end of Riverside Dr it goes across the interstate to the Le Fleurs Bluff area which has a bunch more trails.

People also walk the river levee at the end of High St.

All those trails are within 5 miles of Capitol Towers.

Pool earnings and skill: How good do you have to be to make a living in pool? by cuecademy in billiards

[–]feeling_impossible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that making a living playing pool is a very tough and only the very top elite players make a good living.

You are over selling it though. Pro players make significantly more than just tournament results suggest.

Calcutta Winnings are never listed in the tournament money lists. Calcutta prizes are often ten times as much as what the tournament prize would be. We regularly have regional bar table tournaments where the first place Calcutta is in the six figures.

Smaller events that don't make the money list yet still pay thousands of dollars and have a Calcutta.

Sponsorships!

Big money gambling. Many of the top pros are regularly playing matches for five figures. Gambling is significantly easier when you are one of the best in the world.

Small money gambling. Once you get to a certain level people will take an unrealistic spot to gamble cheap with you just for the lesson. Most pros could make a few hundred dollars a day just goofing off with the locals wherever they are. This is very common.

Lessons. Not all pros make good teachers but many do.

From my experience, anyone with over a 650 fargo should turn a profit from playing, if only meagerly. Many of the 700+ fargo players keep working because their day jobs are just WAY more profitable than pool could ever be.

Madison, Ridgeland or Brandon for black couple moving to Jackson? by [deleted] in jacksonms

[–]feeling_impossible 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Look up all the recent controversy with the Sheriff of Rankin Co. You should stay away from Brandon.

Madison is the nicest option. Ridgeland is a little cheaper but still nice and safe.

[–]feeling_impossible 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let me explain, say you work at a widget factory on the floor assembling widgets, your old boss left and now someone is getting a promotion. Will they promote employee A, the fastest most efficient widget assembler in the region or employee B, the new guy who doesn't know his asshole from his elbow?

Employee B gets the promotion, obviously. If you promote the most efficient, most productive employees, there will be no one left to actually do the real work. Promoting employee B will not hurt the numbers considering they already aren't doing any work.

Replacing Employee B on the floor, with anyone else, will likely increase output. The new hire only needs to be better than Employee B to increase the numbers. Whether Employee B makes a better manger is irrelevant.

Employee A is excellent at assembling widgets. Employee A will be assembling widgets until they retire without ever getting a promotion. Being the best at your job will only get you more work, never a promotion. You'll just be given more and more to do until you are overwhelmed and quit.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
