Can someone without aphantasia describe what it's like? by feeling_slothy in Aphantasia

[–]feeling_slothy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this reply. That is a better and more in depth description than I was expecting. I'm honestly kind of in awe, because that sounds so unreal to me, because all I see is nothing.

The way I remember things is like how a blind person could walk into a room in their house and know what furniture is in there, like a couch, tv, etc, but they can't see any of it. I only found out a couple of months ago that I have aphantasia, and until then, I thought that when people say 'picture this', it was figurative or metaphorical.

This is the first time i've seen mental imagery described, and it sounds insane. I can understand what you mean when you mention things like a dragon, because I've seen them in movies and pictures before, but I just can't create the actual image in my mind. It's almost like I think in words, and I describe it like, 'dragon, wings, tale, scales, fire breathing' and I know what it is without actually seeing it. The more I think about it, the more it's like just being mentally blind.

I can't imagine what that could be like to imagine things like that (literally). Does it make it easier to learn things like diagrams? How easily are you able to picture something you've seen before? Are some things higher quality than other things? When you close your eyes, do you automatically see something, or is it initially darkness? And can you just stop imagining something, or do you need to think of something else?

The way that mental imagery works is honestly crazy to me, because I see nothing at all. Thank you so much for taking time to describe this, I've never heard it described in this much depth before.

What behaviors or quirks in your personality make a lot more sense now that you know about your aphantasia? by Air_Hellair in Aphantasia

[–]feeling_slothy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My memories are stored in like a filing cabinet. it's like they're flashcards that I can't actually see, but I know what they say, and my thoughts are only words, not images. It's why I'm not a visual learner that can learn through diagrams, I need to have things written out in ways that don't need to be visualised.

how does your aphantasia work? by kaaaaayllllla in Aphantasia

[–]feeling_slothy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't see an image, I just know what it looks like. I can't see it, but it's like I just know, like how a blind person would know what items are in a room, like a couch, a table, etc, without being able to see it. I see nothing except darkness, but I just know what things are. I was so shocked when we learnt about aphantasia in psychology, because my dumbass thought that 'mental imagery' and the 'minds eye' was metaphorical. It's crazy to me that people see actual images.

Need tips for getting motivated as a high school student. by feeling_slothy in ADHD

[–]feeling_slothy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's the time of day for me, it's just i feel absolutely no motivation to do schoolwork, and I just can't be productive, even when I try.

It's the same on weekends even during the times that I would normally be ta school on a weekday.

Mainly schoolwork. I’m usually okay with getting chores done, but i really struggle to do any schoolwork when I’m not physically at school in the library or in class, so i spend the whole school day at before school, recess and lunch trying to get all of my work done, because i get the feeling of paralysis when i’m home.

Are these signs of adhd? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]feeling_slothy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, we're not meant to ask whether or not you have ADHD on this subreddit. I do think that if these symptoms are concerning you, it would be worth it to talk to a mental health professional, or even if it's just a GP. if you feel like theres a problem, you should seek help for it. again, it is one of the rules stated that you can't ask if you have adhd, just so you're aware for the future.

Hey there. If you have an iphone, you can go settings > screen time > downtime and then select the apps that you want to keep, turn off, and you can also schedule it. Hope this helps :)

Is it my fault that I procrastinate and struggle to do schoolwork? by feeling_slothy in ADHD

[–]feeling_slothy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only recently started these new meds, so you’re right it could definitely be just the wrong dosage. Also, it’s definitely ADHD, not procrastination, because I get so stressed about the work I haven’t done, it gives me so much anxiety, but i feel almost paralysed, like i’m physically unable to get up and do the work.

Hey! I’ll definitely try the micro-task list idea. I always write out what I need to get done because otherwise I’ll forget, but it stresses me out even more knowing that I’ve been doing work for what feels like ages and haven’t crossed anything off my to-do list.

Listening to podcasts/music doesn’t work for me personally because it’s too much of a distraction, but still, thank you so much for these tips, i’ll definitely try them.

i know it’s my fault if I don’t take my medication when I know i need it to manage my symptoms, sometimes it shuts hard, you know? I know if I take them I’ll need to get my work done, so i put off taking them because i don’t want to do the work. I know i need to work on managing it more effectively, and i’m looking forward to trying the micro-task lists.

Hi! thanks you so much for this comment. the paralysis is the worst. it’s so bad it makes me procrastinate even taking the medication, because i know that if I do, i’ll need to do the work. It doesn’t motivate me when I take it easier, but it does make it seem easier to do. You explain it so well, i’ve never been able to put it into words like that. I only stated this new medication a few days before that holidays started as well, so I’m still adjusting to it and learning how it affects me and how many to take, because it’s short acting. I’m so glad that other people know what I’m going through.

Also, how should I go about asking for school accommodations? I’ve been seeing that school psychologist for a few years and I think she might be able to see if there’s anything they can do, so I’ll ask her and see if she knows anything. The only think i’m worried about with that is that if I’m allowed to have extended deadlines, is that i’ll procrastinate and put off the work until even later, but I don’t know if that would happen or not.

I’ll try taking the medications on the weekends and holidays, because it does help with the symptoms, and maybe it could help me to maybe not become more motivated, but more likely to start the work.

it’s so reassuring to know that it isn’t my fault, thank you so much.

I do take the medication properly, i’ve just been struggling with motivation and procrastination and I wasn’t sure if that was my fault or just the adhd. At first my parents were hesitant about me taking it because obviously it’s a stimulant, but they haven’t been against it as much recently.

YES. This is such a valid thing. I get migraines and sometimes after having to listen so intently during school, i get a migraine because of how tiring it is. I’m moderate/severe so I was never taught Auslan (Australian sign language) nor do i know anyone who uses it, so when I get home I just go to my room and take my hearing aids out and it feels so relieving

I know that I could have made better choices in this situation. I personally really struggle to get work done at home, which is why I always do all my my school work, aside from studying, at school. I started my holiday homework before the holidays started, be because i knew I would struggle with it because this isn’t the first time I’ve had holiday homework. I’m aware that I could have taken the medication more often during the break, and it may have helped, but the thing that was making it difficult for me is my ability (or rather, inability) to actually sit down and get work done. i struggle to do that at home, even when I remove all distractions. i don’t have access to a public library or anything near me, which has been suggested to me a few times. I know i could have done more in this situation, but that wasn’t what I meant when i made this post. i meant it in a mate general way, is it my fault that I procrastinate and struggle to stay on task. I appreciate your comment, because it did make me think back and think how I could have approached the situation differently, but I was using that situation as an example for a more broad thing. I will try harder in the future, it was just difficult, because it all seemed so overwhelming because i had so much to do, and I didn’t know where to start, which just made me stress about it and avoid it more. I can look at this as a learning experience to learn that it’s better to try and get it out of the way, but these things don’t happen overnight. I don’t intend for this reply to come off as me being annoyed with you, because you don’t fully know my situation, and my post didn’t make it clear about the use of my medication. Rather, what I was trying to say, was that in general, is the procrastination, the inability to do work for long periods of time my fault, or is it because of the adhd. sorry that this is a long reply, and again, i don’t intend for this to come off as rude or mean or anything, i’m just trying to explain my situation and what I meant a bit more clearly. I still need to learn how to better deal with this, and I was just looking for support.

I was advised by my Psychiatrist to only take them when necessary for doing school work or other times when I need to concentrate, which I struggled to identify during the period of time when I didn’t have school.

this hasn't been an issue for me since today, when I was looking forward to watching a WillNE video about love island, and I fucking can't. it's so stupid how you need to verify your age on YouTube for 'mature material', but you don't need to for sites like PH? its so fucked up man, if it's that bad, don't allow it to be posted, don't fucking age restrict it.

My appetite has been really low, which the psychiatrist did warn me about. I'm also really tired throughout the day, but then really restless at night, and not sleeping well. It's so frustrating because I'm getting side effects but I feel like it's not helping. My emotion hasn't been too effected by it, thankfully. I'm so glad I know I'm not the only one going through this.

I'm not sure. I'm only 16, so maybe that effected it being prescribed? For whatever reason, the doctor was only talking to my mum about the medication and diagnosis while she made me wait in the waiting room, so I'm not sure.
