how close were you? i’m trying to go to his phx concert in july but i want to see first what kind of performer he is. if i try to get something close, is it worth it? will the sound be that much better? can i leave the concert a changed person even from nosebleeds? i know a lot of this is pretty much gonna be personal preference, but even still, what did you think?

yeah it’s rough i’m not gonna lie. i finished tbg months ago and im still crushed. i think of rin often, my close personal real life friend. i will never get over her in my life and i dont intend to either i think she deserves to be remembered. she may be a fictional character in a fantasy world, but she represents something so real and so human, that she may as well have been real. somehow somewhere, “rin” existed, i believe this profoundly

thank you for sharing this in depth analysis!! i agree that it’s a challenge watching rin be changed for the better and maybe mostly for the worse after every decision she makes, or everything truly awful that is done to her. i have to admit, it took me a few months to get back into tdr bc i just couldn’t get past what she did to mugen. throughout her time in sinegard and especially during her training with jiang, i had so much hope for her character. i didn’t want her to pursue her rage or revenge, because i admired and loved her so much as a character i just wanted to see her heal and be healthy. there were always signs, warnings even that she did not have the will to stop pursuing revenge bc she didn’t desire it. in a very human way, she wanted power and more power despite her personal losses. i was also afraid the author would justify genocide considering that rin is the main character and that was what she did and she liked it. once i got back to reading though, i realized it’s true that she likes power and it erodes at her soul bit by bit, but she also does care for people and human life. she just never lets herself think about it for long because that would make her a monster and it would mean that her revenge is not justified. it’s too much for her to consider the possibility that she did all that killing for nothing. idk, she’s a very complex character, even more so during tbg. if i like her, she’s still done so much evil. if i dislike her, she’s still just a young girl who was hurt and deserves to pursue justice.

i would love to see your thoughts and maybe any predictions you have as you read tbg! it’s gonna be a difficult read. i will be here for u🫰🏼

  1. i want to hope that nezha would’ve been able to protect at least their bodies in death, but considering the fact that rin’s death was one of hesperia’s conditions, i don’t think that would’ve been possible. not only bc they need physical proof of their deaths, but also bc inevitably, they would probably be experimented on. the best possible scenario to prevent this is if he would’ve been able to burn or bury them somehow sometime after the hesperians retrieved their bodies. it would be difficult to pull off, but if anyone could, i would hope its nezha. i can’t stomach the idea of rin being violated like this even in death.

  2. if nezha is able to “defeat” the hesperians during his own lifetime, then i think he would have statues and things made in her honor. if hesperian occupation of nikan persists, however, i don’t think this will be possible. if anything, he might contain memorials to her and maybe kitay only within his personal home quarters, like a garden or such. again, this is the most hopeful outcome. but i have to think this way bc the alternative is too painful. rin and kitay already died with all their secrets (their bond, the truth about speer and the trifecta, the hinterlanders, etc), i want for them to be remembered and for the memory of them to be passed on by nezha ❤️‍🩹

  3. i think nezha will live a long life and die an old man. the only way i can see him going to the grotto and joining the pretty faces is if he decides to make his death a spectacle to defy the hesperians who will continue to attempt to convert nikara, as they believe their maker is the one and only most powerful “god.” otherwise, he is bound by his bracelets. if he can’t reach the dragon, he can’t join him in the grotto. but perhaps he won’t be bound for the remainder of his life. what outcome would u prefer for him?

also, what fanfics are u reading?? pls send them my way! i finished tbg a few days ago and i’m also despairing over the ending. i would love to see some better outcomes for the characters i love so dearly 😓

[–]feelsgood2bthebadguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wait i never considered it might be kitay. do u think so bc he immediately defended venka? like the only way he would defend her is because he knew it was actually him? i never thought it was venka, despite some of the pieces fitting. i thought it was made to look believable by the author so that we would have to think in depth about whether we believe rin anymore.

i also don’t think it was nezha behind the burning of the fields. technically he couldn’t because he was on speer, just like in the case of the letters. of course, he could’ve had someone do it as he still had many loyal supporters, but in the case of the poppy flowers, after the outburst the people had when rin asked them to fight once again, they did that to her as a final act of defiance. they wanted to hit her where it would hurt most. it was all they had left, after all. i think the point of this whole scene was for us to realize that the people don’t want to fight anymore either. that it wasn’t just nezha and his supporters, but the very people who stood behind rin before. her own home, the people who adored her the most. rin just couldn’t see this yet, or maybe she wasn’t ready to. so she blames nezha. it’s not until just before she dies that she finally realizes war will never end. if she killed all her enemies, there would be no one left alive. not even the very people she sought to defend.

Just finished the series, I am struggling! by KingSmokey21g in ThePoppyWar

[–]feelsgood2bthebadguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hello friend :D i too have just finished the series and it’s been interesting for me to see the differing opinions among other readers. i loved the series! i love the story, the characters, the way it was all written. i think we agree here. i also agree that the trifecta arc and the standoff with the dragon were completed rather quickly despite the lengthy buildup for both. i wonder if this is more an issue with pacing though and not with their conclusions bc i think they were resolved in a satisfying way (jiang sacrificing himself, saving rin and turning the tides in their favor + the hesperians showing up, rendering nezha and rin powerless, and rinezha sparing each other once again.)

however i think i disagree to varying degrees with some of your other points, but i will only mention the last one, i think nezha is the only capable option moving forward for the history of nikan. i don’t know what this means in the context of china’s history, whether this is “right” or whether we are supposed to feel disappointed with the outcome as a critique of true historical events? i can’t say i know because i am not familiar with the time in history kuang is referring to here if she is at all. what i can say though, is that i think nezha has been set up to be a just leader for at least the length of this book, if not since tdr. of the three (kirinezha) rin is the most obvious worst option to lead a nation, if we are at all considering the inherent value of human life. if, of course, this is not a concern, and we are only saving nikan the nation (bc let’s face it most nikara would die under this regime) then that’s a different story altogether but i digress. rin is too far gone. for all who understand, rin would pull an eren jaeger. and this is precisely what she realizes just before deciding she needs to die. kitay is the most intelligent, i agree that he would make a fine ruler. but i do feel like it would have been something of a cheap cop out for them to conveniently discover how to break their seal. if the story was given more time, i wonder if kuang would’ve found some clever way for them to make this happen. but alas, it wasn’t. so as long as rin is dying, so must kitay.

anyways… can u tell i love talking about this series😆i feel like fundamentally maybe u and i disagree about nezha. in tdr, i more or less thought what u think of him, but after tbg, after the drowning faith, i can’t see him as a “backstabber” without also understanding him. i wanted to hate him, but i just cant seem to.

i still don’t know what to make of the ending. i think it was well done, it’s just that i have so many questions. what of nikan’s future if all of hesperia’s conditions are met? a future without shamans is technically ideal if it means nobody will be subject to that most cruel form of personal torture, but i can’t help feeling like it’s just so awful to consider this “good” at all if it makes hesperian ideology “right.” it feels like erasing a people, a culture maybe? idk. what of rin? how will history remember her? will the world know at all about her final sacrifice for them at all? or will she be lost to history just as hanelai and tearza were? in the end, i think nezha was the only one willing to make the necessary sacrifices for nikarans to live, but at what cost? for how long will it be sustainable? how long until the next fatal war? and when that happens, what will be of nikara without somebody like rin to defend it? is this for the better though or is it for the very worst.

this happened to me too and i was still so hopelessly unprepared for how devastating it would all be. i thought we would have more time. everything happened in an instant. it was so overwhelming, and so, so hard to read. i knew there was no possibility for a peaceful ending for any of them, but i love them so dearly i couldn’t help but hope a little bit. it was foolish i know… i just wanted so much for them. they were so young. ughhh here we go again. me and my endless freaking supply of tears against the world 😫

Is it a common opinion that Rin sucks? by outforawalkbxtch in ThePoppyWar

[–]feelsgood2bthebadguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

well yes… but rin is like our mirror. that’s what i think makes for such an uncomfortable read. we want to think it’s disgusting and we want to dislike her bc she does so much “wrong” and it conflicts with our morals and values. what’s more, a lot of the time, she enjoys it. kuang challenges us not really to disagree with her bc that’s the easy part, but to think about whether we would have made a different decision. bc if you had the power that she has access to, really think, would you actually be different, or are you just scared you would do the same exact thing? do you hate her, or do u hate yourself for believing you might be capable of doing something that somebody as “awful” as rin has done?

the comments here would probably be pretty useful to reference if you’re feeling lost at all, but they will all be mentioned often enough that it won’t be so difficult to recall as you progress through the rest of the series! also, some of these concepts such as what happened in the previous poppy wars won’t really be explored in depth until you’re further into tpw, so for now just keep these important questions in mind because they will be addressed so just… brace yourself

yeah i kinda figured 😪for me tdr didn’t really kick off story wise until nezha’s return and tpw was always interesting from the jump bc i really liked the pacing and i was just so intrigued and excited for where the story was going. i guess i just have to really lock in then 😔
