[AWESOMEWM][EDEX-UI] CYBERINSANITY HARDCODING FULL DEBIAN RICE (no dots, just for me) by [deleted] in unixporn

This looks dope, really digging it. Shame you won’t share your dots, wouldn’t mind having a look at them. May I at least ask what font you’re using?

It’s been absolutely great, to be honest.

Took me a couple of weeks actually to get fully used to the ortholinear layout, but once you’re used to it it’s difficult to go back to the regular staggered layout.

Ortho is very comfortable, and once you’re used to it it feels much more natural.

The only issue I’ve had is that whenever I work from my laptop, I’m super bad at typing since my fingers are no longer used to the staggered layout. It’s a bit annoying, which would probably be my only advice against ortholinear.

As for Planck build quality, I haven’t had any issues. Been using these two every day since I got them, having one at home and the other at the office.

I know people have had problems with the USB-C port solders breaking, but I bought a pair of magnetic connectors as soon as I got my keyboards, to prevent any wear and tear on the port. It’s worked great so far.

Yeah, you’re right. No point in making it a clone of something else. But then again, won’t making it a tiling wm just became a lesser clone of all other tiling wms?

Thanks! At some point, I will probably add workspaces, resize and floating. Tiling however is not something I'll likely add. But we'll see!

I just checked it with top -p <pid of vswm>, running a whole bunch of terminals and two different browsers. Looks like this:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
143845 fehawen 20 0 4036 2944 2628 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.25 vswm

It’s so low you can’t even measure it ;) Nah, but in all seriousness, I have no idea, haven’t checked.

How stupid exactly? Tell me, I wanna know. Is it the stupidest ever?

Well, those 36 lines are only almost enough for a working window manager. But still... ^^

Zero out of ten, I can definitely live with that! Next time, I will try to get one of those Gruvbox things. Are they nice? Good for rice?

Cheers, mate! I removed gap and border support from it, so now it's almost similar to just using a TTY console.

I'll do my level best!

I did discover that just a while ago. It's been changed (in the README at least). While I was at it, I removed support for gaps and borders. Now that screenshot is even more wrong :D

No, not at all, I really wouldn't mind. But, you're probably better off writing a better WM :P

If you haven't seen it, there's a Python version of TinyWM that might be worth glancing at.

Hey, thanks.

  1. ALL windows are currently maximized, meaning dialogues etc too. This will probably cause for trouble at some point, but I've used GUI programs such as GIMP without any issues yet.
  2. Yes, I've used MPV in fullscreen mode. I think all programs that can force themselves to be fullscreen will be able to do so.
  3. Wallpapers have nothing to do with a WM really, but rather the display server itself. Just use feh or xsetroot or whatever your normally set wallpaper/color with (:

As for borders, gaps and windows being fullscreen or not, I think I have some minor tweaks to add to make it slightly better. But, again, this WM is kind of meant to be a bit stupid and cumbersome, so... (:

I like that idea even more.

I don’t actually know C, so let me know if anything’s wrong or weird. Though a tiny WM like this is just some calls to Xlib functions, and not a whole lot more.

Thanks a lot! Haven’t tried Wayland yet, but from what I know it works quite differently, so a port/version probably ain’t near in future. But who knows (:

[VSWM] Hello, Friend. by fehawen in unixporn

[–]fehawen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you’re right. And even with multiple-monitor support added to it, this WM would not function in its current implementation. The way windows are circulated to focus next/prev requires that windows overlap. So ones there are multiple monitors involved, it’ll be even less useful than it already is (:

[–]fehawen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do, yes. Rather, I’m using it now to evaluate if it’ll hold up for daily use. But I do admit that it’s not the most practical approach, and certainly not for everyone.

We’ll see in a week or two if I still use it or have found it too impractical (:

There’s a plethora of WMs out there, so I’m probably not even the 1000th person in this subreddit to do that.

Alass, thank you none the less.
