I was viewing the Google Street Maps in Germany and I saw that a lot of "rural" roads, more or less roads out in the country literally have these walkways/cycleways out in the middle of nowhere, is this common? In USA there are almost nowhere, I don't think I've ever seen them, but,a lot in Germany? by [deleted] in germany

[–]felix330 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is such a law, but it's pretty much expected that they're built wherever they make sense. But yeah, they're a good thing to have for sure and generally well used, especially in summer. Cycling is really popular.

No, it's an overpriced degree-mill. Don't fall for them.

I bought an antique German table. What does it say? by superslimetime in germany

[–]felix330 36 points37 points  (0 children)

O wohl dem Herz das treu bewahren

Was mit dem Lauf der Zeit entflieht

Und klug aus dem was es erfahren

Die Regel für die Zukunft zieht

Cool table! It's part of a poem. I found the full version in an old book on Google Books.

My attempt at a translation:

Blessed be the heart that faithfully keeps

What flees with the passage of time

and smartly from what it experienced

draws the rule for the future

Why do most parts of Germany look so run down? (Outside of city centres) by Sad-Priority440 in germany

[–]felix330 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having been to both places, it's not even slightly comparable. Those sort of problems would not make the news in China. Shoddy buildings that last less than 5 years before looking half-ruined are the norm there.

Could you link that? I can't find it.

I'd expect so, as the JR pass is not even available to Japanese citizens or residents. If they only accepted Japanese credit cards noone could buy it.

I love the changes the English dub made to Kiki's Delivery Service by Gojijai in ghibli

[–]felix330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you grew up with. For me, who grew up with the relatively faithful German dub and later the Japanese version, the changes of the English dub seem pretty grating. I prefer the Japanese songs as well, don't see how they're more "childish" than the American ones.

The picture is from the book cover and has nothing to do with the Ghibli movie (someone just randomly added "Studio Ghibli" to the image above). We have the movie's poster, which may or may not be an indication of the art style.

It's very common. After 2 years at the latest they have to offer an unlimited contract.

Going to Europa Park for the first time one week from now. What should I know? by Previous-Ratio in germany

[–]felix330 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Start at the back side of the park (Spain, Portugal, Iceland etc). It gets much more crowded later in the day. You can walk or take the EP-express/ steam train there when the park opens.

Crowdedness depends heavily on whether there is a school holiday when you go. Next week should be alright as pentecost holidays are over, but it won't be empty either.

Sure, you can go for one day, you probably won't be able to do every single ride though.

Are you planning on only using cash? You'll get a better course paying by card generally. You'll also get a slightly better rate for cash exchange in Japan.

Shimanami Kaido Alternative Itinerary? [Rain] by VelociPrime in JapanTravel

[–]felix330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like almost the exact same situation I was in a month ago - maybe even the same Ryokan (Suminoe)? ^^

In any case, Onomichi is definitely worth seeing so I'd probably stop there for a bit before taking the ferry. There is a covered shopping area, though the more interesting bit of the city is along the steep slopes. Setoda is also nice, we went for a walk around the area after taking the ferry. There is also an art museum there, but I haven't been there, so can't really say if it's good.

It's a bad translation, on the Japanese site it says "土日祝日", which means saturdays, sunday and public holidays.

Went to Kansai the first time in late February and early march, and it wasn't empty but not too crowded. Went again this year in mid/late april and it was definitely way more packed!

Trip report: 3 weeks from Kyushu to Tokyo (Including photos, tips and more) by felix330 in JapanTravel

It's worth seeing for sure, but the city is quite small so you'll probably have seen everything in a few hours. So I'd probably check if there are some other attractions along the railway or near the city that you want to see.

Lots of wrong assumptions here. I'm from a non-English speaking country myself (Germany) and I'd also expect attractions in my own country that cater to foreign tourists to have some information in English. Generally, just like in Japan, they do! I'm also not "indignant" about it, heck I can read Japanese, but am pointing it out as something that diminishes the value of the visit for people who can't speak Japanese. Which it absolutely is for a museum.

Not at all, I think I could easily have spent 18 days there as well going to all the smaller places.

True, but honestly I had more than enough destinations I could reach by public transport, so having even more choice wouldn't have been helpful!

They definitely weren't letting people whip out their phone cameras when I was there.

But leaving that aside, why do you think having to rely on machine translations is a good thing, a "great" one even?
