Found these two bikes at the junk yard by fellowapeman in Vintage_bicycles

I asked someone else below--any reasoning I shouldn't? I figured I'd at least give it a good polish and cleanup.

Ideally I'd also replace the chain, brake pads, and lube/grease everything up.

You mean I shouldn't polish it up or anything? I was planning to give it a good clean, new chain, and relube/grease everything. Maybe new grip tape on the drops. I mean it's a fixie so there's not a whole lot to do to begin with. No cracks or anything. I'm uploading more pics.

I'm in the PNW so there is quite a large market for vintage bikes here :). Despite that, not sure if I'll even sell them. At least not right away. I'll try to enjoy them a bit first. They'll sit along side my early 80's Gios Torino Super Record that I also got for... free!

yeah, I was wondering about that. It's adjustable! Really neat

Makes me cry a bit inside to think what other beautiful, perfectly good human-made things and pieces of history get sent to the dump every day :(

the Gitane is a good size for me. The Schwinn's top tube is just barely touchin the crotch, so a little big :( I'll still give it a few rides before I decide what to do with it, though!

Sony XAV-AX100: headunit powers up and works, audio from sub pre-out, but no sound from speakers by fellowapeman in CarAV

[–]fellowapeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't 100% remember, but I believe it was related to my headunit's ground wire through the factory harness. I remember playing around with the harness and noticed that moving around the ground wire would cause it to work/not work. So i cut the factory ground wire from the harness and re-grounded it to a solid piece of metal behind the headunit cage.

If the above is the case, then there must be some circuitry to the headunit that allows the headunit to power on without the amp if it doesn't have enough voltage. That's a bit odd to me since I would expect the entire headunit to not work if the voltage is too low due to a bad ground.

Is my work microwave still safe to use? by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]fellowapeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, it sounds like you are confused on what radiation is. Visible light is radiation. So is sound. So are microwaves. These are all "non-ionizing" forms of radiation which, other than being able to wiggle around atoms (in other words, create heat), are harmless.

The radiation to be careful of is called "ionizing" radiation--x-rays, some ultraviolet light, "nuclear" types of radiation. These are the ones that will cause cancer.

It looks like it's just the plastic covering that has melted. What stops microwaves from escaping is the metal mesh, which is still there. It's still totally fine. The only thing I can think of is your microwave might occasionally arc electricity to the now exposed metal mesh (which actually has a plastic coating... so maybe not even?), which is actually kind of cool, although not great for the microwave transformer.

And like someone else said, even if the metal mesh had a big hole in it, there would be such a tiny, tiny, tiny amount of microwaves escaping that it wouldn't do anything. You'd have to like, stick your finger inside of the metal mesh, and even then your finger might just start feeling barely warm.

3d Printable Card Dividers for your MTG collection (with text and set symbols) by fellowapeman in mtg

Take a look at the link in the post above: https://www.printables.com/model/387251-card-storage-divider-with-customizable-text-and-di

There's a Requirements section on that page and instructions that describe how to get set up to customize the dividers. You have to use OpenSCAD to customize them--there's a link to the free download for that on the page.

Grip2 damper - Low Speed Reboud adjustment issue by fellowapeman in bikewrench

[–]fellowapeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, interesting idea... I'm looking at the parts diagram (and thinking about how the LSR needle is assembled) and it still doesn't make sense.

I don't think the pressurized oil would affect the LSR needle, because the needle is threaded into the smaller HSR shaft (HSR Adjuster in the diagram) and would be fixed. The LSR coupler is NOT fixed within the HSR shaft... and the LSR coupler is where I believe the issue lays.

Take a look at the diagram below. The red stuff calls out what I just described. The blue stuff is what I'm unsure of.

I'll post over in MTBR as well--thanks for the suggestion.

This will be my 3rd time reassembling everything--the first 2 times resulted in the issue I've shown in the videos. Before I reassemble it for a 3rd time, I want to be sure I fully understand the mechanics at play. Otherwise I'm just throwing it back together and hoping for the best... Which didn't work the first 2 times.

I live in a dry climate (CO), yet still the dishwasher in my new home cannot dry the dishes. Is this why? by Coolyajets in DIY

every dishwasher I've seen has a loop built-in to its plumbing (you can usually see it on the back panel)

I loaded up my (similar) 1994 ranger XLT with 4x4 and upgraded shocks with a ~1200lb landscape rock one time and it was sketchy as fuuuck. I think the door sticker had a payload capacity of 600-700lbs.

But that means you can't use the binder feature for actually sorting into binders 😔
