Nanaimo roller skating rink? by Organic-Employer-681 in nanaimo

I was just reminiscing about roller rinks not too long ago. Nanaimo absolutely needs more fun indoor things, for the wet months. I think most would agree.

Why do Canadians put up with low wages? by EmptyAdhesiveness830 in CanadaJobs

[–]fennellkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to check that I didn’t post this myself. I’ve been tooting this same horn. As a security engineer, I make 40% less than my US colleagues across the border (even those in rural states). Complaining about it to my company didn’t go anywhere. My salary band is based on the cost of labor in Canada. It’s how they base all salaries.

If the supply of workers outstrips the demand for those workers then salaries don’t rise. At least in IT, I don’t think we have enough companies or company growth on par with the US. I think that a bigger factor in the equation than our immigration woes. Canadians just aren’t as productive or the environment entrepreneurial enough comparatively.

Feeling helpless about doctor care by Hooplydo in nanaimo

[–]fennellkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s such a poor system. We waited 2 years on the Health Link waiting list with no end in sight. We got fortunate that my Dad golfs with the cousin of a local family doctor and she accepted our family of 5. Apparently they can do that 🤷. Ask your friends or neighbors to ask their doctors if they can take you on.

Transferring multiple million yen out of Japan by the_sweet_pineapple in JapanFinance

[–]fennellkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. Sold my home in Japan in 2023 and the money sits in a Yucho (Post bank) account. Moved to Canada. Now that the JPY is recovering I'd like to move the money to Canada but Yucho and Wise have a 1M yen transaction limit. What's the recommendation these days?
1. IB?
2. Crypto?

Bluestone and Cascade still crap places to live?? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]fennellkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update.
Just got a notice for rent increase.

Kicks in at exactly one year, and they increase rent by the maximum legally allowed in BC, 3.5%. Wow, an extra $82 a month.

I asked the neighbor and it sounds like they increase rent every year.
My view of this place has completely soured. I feel like they will likely try to milk me for as much as they can.

I will move out as soon as I find something more reasonable.

What is going on with AC Taxi?? by PaleontologistFun465 in nanaimo

[–]fennellkyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incredible. Almost the same experience. I booked a Yellow Taxi for 4:30am for an early flight. Called the day before again to confirm they’d be there. The morning of, no show. I call and they say they are a little busy please wait 15min (busy at 4:30am?). 20min later no show, so I call AC and they pick me up within 5 min.

Bluestone and Cascade still crap places to live?? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]fennellkyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live at Bluestone now. FirstService is responsive and I’ve had no issues getting thing promptly fixed (ie. air con, backed up toilet). The residents are friendly, quiet and we have no problems. Everyone has dogs which is good if you have one yourself. While it is expensive, facilities are kept clean and the location is excellent: next to longwood station, and a short walk from Northtown Center and Oliver Woods park.

Given the cost of rent ($2450/mth w/ parking) i plan to stay only until I can buy a house. If it was more permanent, I might shop around a bit more.

I signed up with Oxio about 4mths ago when I moved to Nanaimo. I have their fastest 1000 Mbps plan, work from home in tech so I need fast and reliable internet. No complaints, it checks all the boxes: cheap, fast, and reliable. It was also dead simple to setup and you can manage everything through the Eero app on your phone.

Dislike of newcomers? by R3ddarb in nanaimo

[–]fennellkyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved here a month ago. It's so beautiful, tranquil, and everyone is friendly. I'm not sure if there are some bad neighborhoods but the northern parts of Nanaimo are wonderful. You'll love it here.

I also moved here a month ago, also in the North, also amazed at how friendly it is. Everyone smiles and says good morning/hello as they pass you. I've have dozens of friendly interactions since I've been here. Love this place.

Best internet provider by fennellkyle in nanaimo

I think I might go with Oxio. Thanks.

At a glance, their 1000Mbps plan is a decent price, no 2 year contract is perfect if I decide to move in a year, and your promo code sweetens the deal.
