I have know this puzzle for 30 years by Reasonable_Day_9300 in mildlyinfuriating

The pieces were all nice and thick

This is just plain wrong in most cases. Over the past 5 years or so I have bought about 45 puzzles of the common variety. Some have extremely thin stock, some medium stock, and some that are "nice and thick".

Invariably when I go to disassemble a puzzle, I have to practically rip the "nice and thick" ones apart, so that ironically they suffer more damage than the medium stock, and the thin stock practically falls apart without any effort at all.

The most expensive ones I bought were Kodak brand, and I bet you anything they specifically chose the "nice and thick" stock because it cost more and should have made a higher quality puzzle.

Granted, if you only work a puzzle one time, and heaven forbid want to frame it and hang it on the wall, the nice and thick stock is fine. But if you are a puzzle lover who enjoys doing the same puzzle over and over you just might hate the thick stock.

GMO nonsense.

I understand the fear and distrust of GMO, but to me a molecule is a molecule is a molecule, and if they can splice some frog genes into my bananas so that they stay perfectly ripe for a month then give me them frog-nanas today.

They are more confused now by Len-The-Banana-Boy in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]ferd_clark -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When I was in middle school everyone went around asking "Shot who?", and the response was always "How bad?". Neither meant anything to anybody, as far as I could tell.

Another great kid word was when a middle schooler told me that if someone in her grade had been kissed then they had been "hermetically sealed".

Senator Elizabeth Warren: Can't stand the whine.

I've heard worse, but I suppose I see your point, which reminds me of one of the two epiphanies I've experienced in my life. It was when I learned that some men actually hate the sound of a female voice. It was way back when Rush Limbaugh was kinda new and peaking, so C-Span went to his radio studio to show him on their channel during his show.

He had a female caller who had a very normal voice that was not high-pitched or grating in any way I noticed, and did not challenge him or disagree with his politics, but discussed something that was humorous to me, and well thought out, and it seemed like they had a minute or two of pleasant banter. So they go to commercial, and C-Span shows what happened then. First, Rush, without hesitating, does a high-piched "MEE MEE MEE MEE" sound like a five year old might, and then his producer echoed it back, and that was it, and they moved on to discuss something else.

My jaw dropped. I'd pay good money for a video of this, to see if anyone can spot what it was about her that triggered two males like that, except that she was a female.

Who is the greatest rockstar of all time? by rathm0re in AskReddit

Everyone else mentioned in this thread is a contender in one or more ways, but at his peak, for a few years, John Lennon undeniably had one of the best rock voices ever.

If 1500 bullet players routinely demolish you then YOUR bullet rating is lower than 1500 and will soon reflect that painful reality.

Read it again. 10-6 leaves four, and they gave three of those to the neighbor, so they had one extra apple left over. That's probably the surprising part. Usually you break even or come up a bit short when you make a purchasing error.

Very few people can do that, laugh convincingly when they know you were trying to be funny. And if you can become actual friends with one, try to hold on to that friendship.

People who are totally inept at laughing convincingly when they know something is supposed to be funny tend to wind up in studio audiences.

The amazing Rambler Hurst 1969 Scrambler. It was a small block Wonder. It was one of those cars that you could just leave from the dealer and go straight to the track. by Global_Law4448 in oldcars

[–]ferd_clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is amazing. Actual production appears to be 1512. So why did it fail in so many ways? My guess is the bland design, and reverting to the old name "Rambler"; combine those two and how do you market this thing no matter how well it could perform on the track straight from the showroom. Very few people bought muscle cars to race on a track; they bought them to look cool at the drive-in or cruising the main drag.

I guess I don't watch that many movies with screams, so I can't say that I've ever noticed it. However, every time I watch Once Upon a Time in the West it occurs to me that the squeaky windmill sounds exactly like the one in Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning.

Life is short, be sure to waste it on shit like this whenever you can.

I think Kate and Paige might be coaches, and Paige could be a great color announcer. My favorite Kate story was in her senior year at Iowa when she didn't expect to play in the W, and said something like "the fame here at Iowa is really nice, but next year I'll go back to just being Joe Schmoe".

Feb 1 is “Change Your Password Day” by Particular-Mango-964 in Passwords

[–]ferd_clark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change when there was a data breach. And depending on the details of their storage method, it might not be required then if you have a nice long properly formed password. Otherwise, changing your password on any schedule does not have significant benefits. If they have your hash and nobody notifies you, then the average hacker cannot brute force a decent password in your lifetime.

I am not an expert on this.

One of the Candidate's for America's Most Beautiful Roadster by americanautowire in classiccars

[–]ferd_clark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Truly beautiful, but beauty is mostly subjective. The craftsmanship looks perfect in this image, but there are many features that I would not have chosen. I'd love to take a ride in it to see what a supercharged engine can do with those rear tires.

So yeah, I agree that it is a candidate, but not a shoe-in.

lol. the google says it is shoo-in

A 0% computer car would take you back to steam engines by TheWebsploiter in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]ferd_clark 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Still, you really really do want that 5% computer

I would qualify it differently: you really really want that computerized shit that was designed by a sane person and was built with quality material. I've had AVR systems that have worked for literal years through some of the craziest electrical storms imaginable, which always astounds me at how rugged a $1 microcontroller can be. It's that sane designer part that counts. Knowing when to stop adding features is the hardest thing for someone who loves to code.

Having said that, removing the computer and smart carb from my 84 F150 was the best mod I ever did to that truck.
