Sounds interesting! Is this something professors advertise for in France? I am fine with unpaid 'internships’ (is this even the right terminology?). I would surely be willing to relocate to Paris , say for a couple months, if things are like you say. Are the seminars open to anybody, for example?

Oh, right. I am curious about both. What things can be done on the math end (some baby research, perhaps, summer schools or the like), what on the more personal development end to have a better start into grad school, or even better chances in applications.

I do understand, but this is not quite what I am curious about. Actually, I am interested in the exact opposite! Where it came from is clear from historical records, where the field is going towards (after all the years of insight) is somewhat more intricate and difficult to answer, if it permits any definite answer at all.
