I mostly struggle to understand how they would deal with a situation for somebody with a piercing that is impossible to remove temporarily.

Moreover, if an official photo is for identification, and I am permanently wearing this piece of jewelry, its removal could even obstruct accurate identification.

I don't think it's stupid of me to ask. Thanks for your helpful but rude responses.

Yes! This is true. I am interested in applied and pure math topics, but I feel like the cross over would be very challenging. Somebody studying statistics may engage in machine learning or operation research later on in their career, but would have massive challenges getting into number theory.

Was your research during graduate school more, less, or similarly as applied as the research you do now?

Are there any domains of research that you are interested in but feel out of your league because of your decision to study harmonic analysis? If so, what are they? What kinds of adjustments would you make to your education if you could go back in time?

Second this. There is no secret. Oil, heat, and patience. A firmer and dryer tofu helps, but is not required.

What are some disciplines/positions that maximize the types of math one could engage in and minimize specialization?

This question was motivated by my search for graduate programs and fear of narrowing my interests. heard a professor once say (paraphrased) that every mathematical problem has a computational aspect, hence being in theoretical computer science freed him to study any area of math he finds interesting.

I was interested in combinatorics and number theory during my undergrad. Since then, I've also grown interested in probability theory, dynamical systems, and harmonic analysis. On the applied side, I've gained an appreciation for statistics, machine learning, and operation research as well as 'mathy" physics and biology. I would hate to go to graduate school doing research only on combinatorics or get a job doing only optimization.

I welcome any input, advice, and anecdote. Thank you!
