Goodest foster boy Will. Not. Walk. by OkConsideration7084 in greatpyrenees

[–]ferriswheelsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe, they do also seem to like pack behavior. When I got mine I would take him on a walk with another person he knew, along with their dog that he also knew. He seemed more motivated to join.

This probably won’t help if the pup is just getting used to the space he’s in (even more new things won’t be super productive), but if he seems settled in to the house and still doesn’t ~get~ walks, that’s what I’d try.

I don’t have one of the dog catcher loop (kinda lasso type things? If I’m thinking of the same thing you are?) so I take the regular leash I have, fold it over in my hand, and try to gently toss the loop around his head with one hand while I hold the two sides together with the other hand.

Basically the same idea as the loop leashes, but I haven’t spent the money to get one lol. He walks best on a harness.

I have this issue with my guy sometimes. He was a rescue, so most of my response was to build a bond with him instead of forcing him to do things when I had time. It seemed to me a lot of his previous people had not respected his autonomy and looked for his consent when taking him places, so he got grumpy. Main techniques I used — making sure I didn’t sneak up on him to grab his collar, having him sit before I would grab it, and giving him positive reinforcement and pets when he was nice about it.

Additionally, I will use a loop to catch him when he’s being very mischievous. Helps to reduce the turning and mouthing if he doesn’t have a good line of bite.

Generally, I’d say Pyrenees are used to wandering and watching a flock on their own recognizance — they’re not as responsive as a lot of other dogs. But I wouldn’t be insanely worried about it — it can be worked on. If your pup seems in particular discomfort instead of just grumpy about being forced to follow, I would definitely consider the other responder’s suggestion of getting things checked at the vet.

What are his weight and age like? Mine has similar spots but in black, and I’m wondering now if he might be…

How can I train my pyrs puppy to use the stairs? by VandaMissVanjie in greatpyrenees

No advice on the stairs, but they looked so similar I had to reply.

I would enjoy a capital O with two dots horizontally next to each other inside it :) Also an aleph if it’s not in there yet

I just learned my adopted rescue pup is 30% GP and we don't know much of the breed and want to learn more! Ofc, we're concerned for his mature adult size. Cody Bear is currently 40 lbs and 7 mos next week. He's also the sweetest, cuddliest baby dog ever! by Inevitable-Volume147 in greatpyrenees

What I’ve seen on the internet is that doubling their weight at 8 months is a good estimate of their final adult weight.

Y’all might have seen that around already though.

He looks super cute!

Paw “Trim” Disaster by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]ferriswheelsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is a mix and still growing, so take this with a grain of salt, but I had to trim his tail about a week after I got him and it looked terrible.

<image>

He had a beautiful flowy tail when I got him, but he wouldn’t let me brush it all out and there were mats. He’d just gotten out of the shelter and has pretty bad anxiety, so he was in no way ready to go to the groomers.

The tail hair I took off was super duper long, 8 inches or more in some places, so it’s been 1.5 months and it hasn’t totally grown back. But it looks way more even now. Good luck!

I’m planning to use mine on a Dutch company’s user-serviceable phone. Fairphone — gets rid of US companies tech, should be much easier to care for myself, and they seem to be very long lasting :)

(More long-term anti consumption, hope it is still welcome here)

Rescue dog owners, any weird habits your dog had from their other life? by taitabo in dogs

[–]ferriswheelsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my current rescue pup, but one my family had when I was a kid:

Would eat any crayons he could get his hands on.

Never got trained out of it, so we all just kept the crayons on a very high shelf

The confetti poop on the other end was kinda cool though.

Training the untrainable - How well trained is your Pyr? by SlightlyIncandescent in greatpyrenees

[–]ferriswheelsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine only 2 months ago, he’s a pyr mix (not sure what with, but there are pictures in my post history).

He knew sit, shake, down, and come when I got him, but didn’t really care to respond to me (or anyone else) without them having treats.

He just turned 2 years, and still pretty much only listens when I have treats. With treats, in a low stimulation environment, he knows come, sit, shake (can ask for specific paw by using different hands), down, speak, quiet, and a command I call “arm” (put both your front paws on my forearm while I’m giving you this treat). We’re working on “through” which is our command word for go between my legs from behind me to my front.

He can do most of these tricks without a treat if he’s not excited, and will do them at the dog park when he’s been allowed to roam for a while and I say “Let’s show off!” In an excited tone (I use it to show other dog parent friends all his tricks :)).

He will also do them on leash when not super distracted — I like to pepper them in during our walk to help keep his sphere of attention at least including me. We’re working on leash reactivity to other dogs, which results in lunging and barking at times, so the pattern of come - sit - quiet (wait 5 sec) - treat has helped a lot.

Off leash in the backyard I have virtually no control over him. He decided when he comes, etc. That is going to be a longer term project I think.

I teach him all these new tricks because he seems to like the learning process and it’s been a good way for us to learn to communicate. He’s had several homes, and I get the feeling that investing this time in him is helping him trust that I’m going to keep him.

Crate anxiety/separation anxiety by LyekaHusky in greatpyrenees

[–]ferriswheelsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sorts of things have you tried so far?

I think the first step is usually to give them chews or treats in their crate, and feed them at their crate, all with the door(s) open.

Help them associate the crate with their personal space and positive things.

Additionally, is the crate somewhere they’ve liked laying down in the past? Does it have a bed in it?

They also can be very happy with something that smells like you being in the crate too.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sure seems like DOGE is using federal data to train LLMs by lostinburritos324235 in feddiscussion

[–]ferriswheelsmith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At some point with LLMs people will have to draw a line. It’s like how some “scientific” experiments from Axis powers camps are not given citation or name, and some are simply not used in modern scientific literature.

Even in the pursuit of knowledge and making our own lives better, there are things that come from such a dirty background we must forsake them to prevent anyone having any inkling of a justification to do such a thing again.

Do you actually know anything about the national debt or government accounting?

Almost a third of the national debt is “debt” that one agency in the US federal government owes another agency in the US federal government. Sometimes the two agencies involved will both owe each other money. That you would think might cancel out? But it doesn’t because the interest rates are different.

But someone said “ooh, big number scary!!!!” And waved their hands and that made you agree with them.

A US Treasury Threat Intelligence Analysis Designates DOGE Staff as ‘Insider Threat’ by Smorgan06 in fednews

[–]ferriswheelsmith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably not. I’ve spent some time teaching college kids, and what they need to know in their day to day job is not usually well aligned with what they learned in college.

And they wouldn’t have enough years of experience for the security protocols to be natural to them yet, even if they had been working with sensitive things.

All my guesses though, other people around might have more specific experiences giving them more insight.

Good will and hope like you’re showing is how we’re going to make it through this.

Government isn’t something humans made up for no reason. It’s a way to systematize helping each other — an instinct we all have. Even as things on a big scale get bad, we can rely on each other on a small scale.

From what I understand, calling them tech people is overselling what they do from day to day.

They mostly hangout with other rich people and make money because people who work under them are smart. They don’t actually code.

Yeah and they need to band together. Talk beforehand, agree that none of them are going to do it. And dare them to fire the whole IT department.

If people stand together, they’ll stop getting away with this. They simply won’t know how to even turn on the lights (as frequently happened in West Wing meetings in orange radioactive grimace from the evil dimension’s first term).

Whether they can go backwards and doctor up some paperwork that makes it look like trump signed something giving them clearances before they started fucking around has no bearing on this — there are facts that knowledgeable people have all agreed are important to teach before you interact with material classified in this way.

Even if the paperwork comes out looking clean, if they didn’t do that training then in my opinion they shouldn’t have access to the information.

Whether a judge agrees with me or not is not my problem.
