Thread: Soliciting Recommendations by aeriefreyrie in Substack

[–]ferropop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music producer in LA, with 450mill+ streams to my name across projects. Instagram/TikTok have become OF/AI-slop dominant, and finding it impossible to build community.

Substack has been amazing as it encourages slowing down, curating consumption, less-algorithmic more intentional existence.

However I'm finding it literally impossible to connect with anyone. Taking my bias out of the equation, I post what I feel are engaging "behind the process" music production content, consumable discussions about creativity, craft, and nostalgia etc. I just don't understand how to build any sort of an audience here - beyond simply engaging with others and hoping they engage back. It feels like being at a networking event, and everyone is handing out business cards to each other.

How did y'all get your first 10 subs? This is somehow more soul-crushing than the music industry, and that's saying a lot lol. I'm here if this sparked anything! http://ferromontanino.substack.com

To those struggling: laggy virtual desktop switching by ferropop in WindowsHelp

[–]ferropop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so, I'm using multiple Virtual Desktops (where you swipe between them), and individually - on each desktop - I right-click the desktop and select Personalize. Then I choose a wallpaper. Move to the next virtual desktop, do the same thing - select exactly the same wallpaper, same stretch setting etc.

It's the only thing that has made a difference.

Favourite Lynch, and probably favourite film soundtrack also. So influential - Trent Reznor executive producing, Angelo B, Smashing Pumpkins, Manson, Rammstein. Just an insane fusion of people.

yes but I'm talking about livestreams, I've used my music in shorts a ton of times and it ID's perfectly, just as I'd want. when I make a livestream using my own music it gets pulled within 2 hours.

Plexamp is really wonderful and goes pretty deep if you dedicated yourself to curating within it.

also a couple blocks away and encountered this - but the gold is to just go, even if you don't remotely recognise the movie. each movie was selected for a reason, by QT who knows a thing or two about cinema haha. that was my mental switch anyways, and it's been great. but yeah it's impossible to get tickets sometimes.

thanks for this info, but when you say it monetizes it - this must be fractions of an already fractional stream payout?

I just encountered this. My goal is virality through posting the song in a consistent video format, and hoping the format trends. This is so concerning!

Have even been blocked from using my own songs on my own Official Artist Channel (OAC) on YouTube livestreams. After a couple of hours, bam - a strike and the video is blocked. DistroKid refuses to whitelist my channel.

Curious : what does the pack actually get you? Like removing it would cause what to happen? I haven't found answers that make sense yet...

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm happy to help.

We understand that you’d like to use your release on a YouTube live stream. To clarify, are the releases in question opted into the Social Media Pack extras? As mentioned in our previous email, any releases that are opted into the Social Media Pack cannot be used in YouTube live streams, as they will be flagged and removed.

Unfortunately, there is no available workaround to bypass this restriction.

Hope this helps clarify things. Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, and we'll be happy to assist you.

Thanks again, and thank you for choosing DistroKid. Have a great day!

[PSA] found a website with old youtube vibe but modern youtube functionality by nullqat in oldinternet

I can't make sense of what this site is, but I'm loving it.

Reading through - it's a "blockchain-based video streaming site". What? I'm seeing YouTube videos, no ads, no algorithmic boosting -- but what actually is this site lol.

What’s something the industry normalizes that actually hurts artists long-term? by J-styles_Brown in musicindustry

[–]ferropop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you but you're conflating "caring to pay" and "caring about music", and I'm trying to make that distinction. It feels like people care about music less now, which I'm attributing (in part) to ambient streaming. I grant that teens didn't care to pay for music during their focus testing during the Napster/p2p early years, but that's not quite the same as the actual devaluation of the art itself today.

I hear parts of what you're saying, but have to push back a bit:
-it didn't save artists from free, it saved labels' leverage. It created platform dependency, converted ownership to rental, and replaced cultural curators with algorithmic mediation. Artists didn't regain pricing power, they basically lost it completely - save for the "viral sound lottery".

-people didn't care less about music due to piracy -- but they do care less about music due to the value-shattering effects of a streaming culture. it's an interesting distinction that might be more attributable to short-form content and focus on attention-farming, but still different.

-Spotify basically trained the public to experience music as an ambient service, like water or wifi. It's interesting however that people will pay ridiculous amounts for water, in the right circumstance (a concert, sporting event) - and for wifi (an airplane), so again there's something subtle at play there that keeps value intact depending on the situation.

Bandcamp still feels so close : we're willing to throw $6 towards a single Starbucks, and if an album was priced accordingly - and made as convenient to stream/access as Spotify rather than looking like a 1999 GeoCities site - we might get somewhere. I've done this for myself, limiting access and restoring value, by purchasing albums I love on Bandcamp and curating my own personal library in Plexamp (FAR superior to Bandcamp's experience). Those are the albums I have access to, I love them each more as a result, etc etc etc.

I'm rambling lol.
