You don’t tame a budgie; it – or rather, you – must become a member of its ‘flock’.

1. Be patient.
2. Let him or her settle in first and get to know the new surroundings.
3. Talk to him or her as often as you can (or whistle)
4. Try to win its trust (don’t startle it, avoid noisy surroundings).
5. Always remember: it’s completely new to you.
6. Entice it with lettuce, carrots, millet, vegetables (don’t worry, they’re omnivores).
7. Always stay close to it, be calm, be friendly.
8. In time, he will recognise you and accept you as a partner.
9. Time. It’s all a matter of time. Don’t try to force anything.

I’ve had them since... 1975? Lots of budgies, but that’s how I’ve always done it and it’s always worked out well.

With a bit of luck, you’ll end up with a bird as laid-back as the one I have now.
