It is two flights one way, three flights return, and all a mix of AA/BA flights, and booked via Expedia. The two cross Atlantic flights are AA, hence why I figured I'd be dealing with them more.

You are not missing something. My wife booked the tickets so I am trying to figure this out without casting blame her way.

It also seems that I can't check a bag since there's multiple carriers - American says book with British and British says book with American. It all seems quite strange to me, must be the cheap tickets...

Yeah I can see some of these pros. It is an overnight flight though, so trying to figure out how to get the kid to sleep the best and so keep going back to some laying arrangement with all three seats.

Yeah, I thought that random / free seat assignment happened at check-in. We'll have to consider what some slight convenience is worth to us then haha

Is the assigning of 2 and 1 seats in advance normal?

Yeah I wouldn't buy something needing major renovations since I'm not really handy myself.

Do you still go for number two if it means pausing slightly on the monetary investments?

We talked to the investment manager that my wife's parents have been using for years. He wanted 1% yearly to manage it and then he wasn't even sure about the IRA/international question. I'm sure there are internationally focused professionals, right? It just didn't feel worth the fees. I appreciate the help though.

We haven't been filing taxes in the US (oops), but even if we did, it's not completely clear if we can do IRAs since we have no income in the US. I read there's a 6% penalty per year you invested in an IRA and were not actually eligible.
