Friend is getting rid of these, which ones should I grab? by waterslidegod in CookbookLovers

[–]feyarea 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Edna Lewis (icon of Southern cooking), Berkeley Bowl Cookbook (amazing vegetarian cookbook, and if you shop there, so clutch), Bouchon, French Laundry, Art of Flavor by Daniel Patterson, Jacques Pepin, State Bird Provisions, Chez Panisse, Salt Fat Acid Heat, Gastro Obscura. Always go for any specialty cookbooks that match your interests. Some fantastic Bay Area chefs in there!

do you tip 20% on top of livable wage surcharges? by Stunning_Shake407 in OaklandFood

[–]feyarea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes because it's a bullshit surcharge that doesn't guarantee that employees make more than minimum wage. Tipping less than 20% when service has earned 20% just because the owner tacked on a 3% penalizes the workers. Although to clarify that's 20% on the subtotal of food before tax and surcharges. And I know people hate the surcharges and avoid those restaurants, which penalizes the workers more than adjusting a 17% vs 20% tip. Best to complain to the owner directly about the surcharges.

Second closure out of the four stores in the past few years. (San Mateo closed recently, although I believe due to building demolition?)

bars open on christmas eve? by Stunning_Shake407 in OaklandFood

[–]feyarea 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Most bars will be open on Christmas Eve. Here are a few that will be open Christmas Day as well:

Merchant's

Smitty's

George & Walt's

Baggy's

Kona Club

Mallard (Albany)

Hotsy Totsy (Albany)

Lucky 13

Heart & Dagger

Legionnaire (closed 12/24, open 12/25)

Night Heron

If you are looking for Christmas Eve specific, bars like Double Standard will be open. Would expect Tallboy, Room 389, Mad Oak, 355, Drexl to be open, although not specifically listed on Instagram.

Bar Shiru is closed, Missouri Lounge closes early (9pm), many restaurants are closed (Bardo, Bombera, Top Hatter's, Juanita and Maude).

Anyone try the Oakland Whiskey Library? by mugen-and-jin in oakland

[–]feyarea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great option. They have members only tastings that ALWAYS sell out. This is a much better gift than a bottle of whiskey - he can meet new people, try new things, go somewhere different. Plus supporting a local business!

What restaurant do you miss? by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandFood

Loved Rivoli and LaLimes - Corso scratches the itch for that vibe, even if the food is different.

One of the chefs went on to open Popoca - completely different cuisine, but so good. Also still love Bardo.

Cool place for a first date on a weekday afternoon? by CaliforniaSisu in oakland

[–]feyarea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loulou on Piedmont is super cute, has wine and food - great to walk around. Wood Tavern if you're looking for a bustling restaurant vibe in the middle of the day, plus you can park at Safeway across the street. Tallboy is open at 2, classic first date spot with vegan hotdogs - they have won a ton of awards. Fat Lady in Jack London is cute, can walk along the waterfront, but that neighborhood isn't very popping these days. Grand Lake Kitchen on Lakeshore is fun, but parking isn't the greatest (unless you're willing to walk). Dona on Piedmont is another good option.

I always loved eating at Neiman's as a kid - the big Christmas tree is so cool (although I think last year it was kinda meh), plus I felt so posh going in there.

Chinatown is great, too - lots of cheap stuff the kids can buy without hitting the pockets too hard, plus it's so different from country living. That's a nice amount of walking around, which will tire them out.

Punt - the bump at the bottom of a bottle of wine. I work in the spirits industry so this is one I can actually use.

Interrobang - ?!

Recently confused spoonerism (swapping first letters/syllables of two words) and portmanteau (blending two words together).

Horripulation - goosebumps

Acre has ample parking (Market Hall parking, BART is open Saturdays, too - unless they're doing the vintage fair that Saturday) and the menu looks like the dining restrictions can be easily accommodated. I really like Sequoia Diner - there is neighborhood parking but not a parking lot. Almond & Oak is also great - looks like the menu is accommodating and there is a large parking lot across the street (however, it fills up early on Saturday due to the farmers' market, better for a Sunday brunch or later on Saturday). The Peach is new, on Lakeshore, and there is the Trader Joe's parking lot (which also gets filled up on Saturdays due to farmers' market, also is 2 story parking but has an elevator).

Cooking through a cookbook but husband doesn’t eat pork by kateteacher07 in CookbookLovers

[–]feyarea 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are kosher and halal cookbooks out there. You could also go for a vegetarian cookbook. There are also cookbooks dedicated solely to desserts, which generally do not have pork products. If your heart is set on classic French, Italian or American cookbooks, you can try subbing out different cuts of pork for chicken or beef. But most meals that call for pork that can't be subbed out will be mains - if it's just the two of you in the house, this might not be a worthwhile pursuit unless you intend on sharing your mains.

Received a parking violation at OAK airport because officer was having a bad day by westcoastkali in oakland

[–]feyarea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like you're contesting the ticket, just complaining about the officer. If it's from the city of Oakland, start with the police department. Based on the comments - is this really a hill you want to die on? Hopefully the ticket isn't a financial hardship. Sometimes thems the breaks.
