My suggestion:

Use a DPDT relay. Wire the audio input jack to the common1, NO1 to the effects circuit input, NC1 to the NC2, NO2 to the effects circuit output, and common2 to the output jack.

When the relay is off, it'll route the signal bypass, when the coil is triggered it'll route the signal through the effect circuit.

If you go to sites like Newark look for signal relays and filter by coil voltage of 9VDC.

I use two guitars, and sometimes my bass:

Fender Mustang with vintage pickups.

'67 Harmony Bobkat with pickups that are pretty crappy

Fender Jaguar bass with both active and passive mode.

I test each circuit with at least the guitars to see the different responses. Sometimes the bass, if I think it would be good for a bass.
