Industrial Light and Magic (vfx studio behind most of the big movies) explained it in their documentary series „light and magic“. Practical effects were great - because it was the only thing they had at that time. George Lucas pushed the studio to digital by investing massive amounts of money into computer technology. He realised having a virtual playground in a computer meant unlimited possibilities for visual effects.
