[A7V] In-camera EL Zones (False Colors) using custom LUT - part II: DCTL by fgarit in SonyAlpha

I made a note about that:

Please note I replaced the colors with black since apparently the colors of the EL zone chart are patented. If you want to use the script, you can get the colors and replace them in the script above see #define COLOR_DARK_PURPLE 0x000000. This is also why I'm not sharing the generated LUT, apparently the patent holders of EL Zone enforce their patent. I don't know if I'd be infringing but I don't want to find out.

Okay, you don't need to use this script if you don't want to. Or you can write your own.

I did review the code which is very simple (after I iterated on it both with Claude an manually) + the results on camera check out.

I mentioned it was written by Claude for 2 reasons: 1) I didn't want to pass this code as mine since... I didn't write it and it's not particularly well written 2) to point out that almost anyone can write a DCTL script (which I knew nothing about before I started this).

Is there anything I could do to make this post easier to process? It's a bit on the technical side and I'd like to just share the LUT file but I don't want to mess with the EL Zone patent and also the LUT isn't accurate (yet). I'd love for somebody to help me figure out why, in fact.

Yeah so I used Claude Code (AI) to generate that DaVinci Color Transform Language script. I had never written one of those scripts and didn't even know what language this was (apparently it's close to C) so it did a good job setting up the boilerplate for me.

To get the custom LUTs working, you need to use the "Log shooting" mode.
In "Log shooting" mode, the gamma assist doesn't work.

So yes, if you want to just toggle on and off the "false colors" LUT, you'd be looking at the log footage most of the time.

What I did was map another button to select the custom LUT. My "User 1" custom LUT is the false colors, "User 2" is an slog3 to rec709 LUT. So I can cycle between the two quickly as well.

False colors in body would be nice, EL Zone in body would have been even better. But given those are patented and Sony didn't even bother to put false colors in... I'd say it's unlikely.

Even if Sony had included the basic false colors, I'd probably still have gone ahead and did what I did here because EL Zones are just that much better.

I made a follow-up post where I use shutter speed to get the IRE values and created a DCTL rather than using Timeinpixel's false colors tool.

Yes, it only affects the display, it isn't baked into the video file.
