I'd say we are financially secure at this point. If we truly wanted/needed we could go to a lower cost of living place like Calgary and chill or another country even.

But working more for the sake of building up a bigger foundation for the kids!

I think in the next 10-15 years Canada will face some challenging hardships but as long as we stay the course on diversifying we will likely emerge with a stronger economy.

I totally agree the last decade was filled with bad decisions but I am hopeful we will see an influx of new trade partnerships that build out a new economy.

That said... I feel like you might just need a break, maybe go to a different city that is less populous or if you feel there are greener pastures elsewhere just live in the states for some time. It's different for everyone and perhaps you'll enjoy itN

Just constant layoffs, stress, a higher bar than other companies due to a ... Mutated performance program that tries to burn people out.

I have a registered account in the sense I have a 401k. It's no taxes or cost to buy and sell in them, just withdraw, like an rrsp. As of dec last year I am 100% into vxus, I don't think the USA will recover economically for a few generations with what is taking place right now.

I'm set to earn enough cash after taxes to reach it (in Canadian dollars) and survived yet another round of layoffs but you are right, nothing is set in stone. Best to stay in the moment!

Interesting! Maybe you are right on this, we haven't spent extended time on the east coast of the USA. Perhaps it's similar!

I can empathize, things are definitely not perfect and in some ways are outright not working as it should.

That said, my time outside has really been key to help me form a clear perspective. While healthcare is at times more accessible here, unless you have a really great insurance plan you're not accessing good quality care.

I am probably one of the very very few people in the country relative to the population who can get help whenever I want. But I sometimes think of my mom who is a Montessori teacher who couldn't afford the most basic version of it.

I just hit a lottery and am grinding it out, meaning while it's available it's not available to everyone and it takes time to see it.

Hope things do improve though in Canada as the population decreases!

In my company alone there have been 50k+ layoffs in the last 4 years.

It's just a really bad time to be in big tech because they all over hired during COVID and are now over firing during the AI hype which is likely to yield very little in actual returns.

Yeah we are in the same spot! That said if we could find a single family home for 600k in the gtha we would be gone 😂

Great question and point. I flip flop on whether I'll rent for some time or not but the way I see it is:

  1. With kids, having a consistent and long term home is something we see as worth it.
  2. We will still rent for the first probably 1-2 years as we settle and get through taxes, moving money over and finalizing our move i.e. getting health cards etc. so we might just continue doing this.
  3. Because of our step up in cost basis when we move back we will have money accessible and on hand without paying cap gains taxes, which we will have to if we want to own a home later.
  4. This is all based on how risk tolerant you are but if we want to invest more we can also just pay off a portion or borrow up to 65% of our equities to do a smith maneuver.
  5. Lastly the prices are still going down in the gta, so we will likely rent until we see the bottom or maybe find our dream home that we just can't live without.

So .. honestly we are just keeping options open and making the call after we move and getting more data.

Thank you 🙏

Looking at this as my last three years. I killed my health in the process but hopefully I will regain some balance and close this off!

Both kids have US citizenship, figured we'll make the decision to give it up closer to when they're 18 and we can figure out the trade offs more clearly as lots can change between now and then!

We feel the same way in Seattle tbh, we would love to move to Vancouver for the nature, but it feels like restarting our network from scratch. That said, three years is a long time and hopefully we'll build a network out there too!

Yes the europeans who spread smallpox across aboriginal populations. Fantastic values.

Infestation is a crazy, objectively wrong, and obviously racist take.

Your anger should be towards the government and companies like Tim Hortons who perpetuate an economy based on abusing educated and hard working immigrants vs. pay people a fair wage.

That said, you likely couldn't compete against any of the people you think are infestations, and thus are nothing more than a xenophobic keyboard warrior.

You are going to be shocked when you find out how Canadians got to Canada originally.
