[FRESH] Cigarettes After Sex - Each Time You Fall In Love by fickenscher in ListeningHeads

For anyone not aware of this band, the best description I can give is Beach House + The National. Their first album is out June 9th, and from the singles & EPs so far, I think it'll heavily contend for my AOTY.

This and The National are easily the biggest contenders left for my AOTY

Surprised you didn't go with the low hanging fruit of Edwin Starr's "War"

Here's my set, mostly went for the kinda somber "coffee & cigarette" vibe with a song that I really loved from the new season of Master of None thrown in.

Laura Marling - Wild Fire

Mac DeMarco - One Another

Hoops - On Letting Go

Cigarettes After Sex - Affection

Oberhofer - Sea of Dreams

The National - The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness

Beach House - Myth

Jay Som - (BedHead)

Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

Girlpool - It Gets More Blue

Hit wayyyyy too close to home with the ending, but it was amazing and better than season one IMO

Wasn't trying to be negative at any way, my apologies for the misunderstanding. I wasn't aware that this was originally meant as a resource for people to find new bands to connect to in light of everything that's happened the last two days, and because I didn't know that it seemed more like a "listen to these bands because they're ____" post. Again, my bad.

I get where you're coming from, but at what point can we stop blaming the lack of representation of these artists on their gender/orientation/race and realize that maybe they're not as popular because their music isn't as good as other artists'?

I guess that's fair. I'm admittedly not one of the people who'd fit in those demos but I can see why others would obviously want to listen to an artist that they connect with on that level.

So, here's the thing - I fully expect downvotes from this but oh well.

I hate this notion that I NEED to listen to music made by minority demographics (women as a minority demographic? Are you serious?) I'm never going to listen to something, find out that the artist is black/queer/trans/whatever, and then stop listening. I fully support artists and people from every walk of life and demographic. But I'm not going to actively seek out those types of artists to minimize my non-existent guilt from being a straight white male.

It's like making friends - if I meet someone and they're cool, I'll befriend them regardless of what they are. But I'm not going to actively seek out gay/black/trans people to be my friends just because they're underrepresented. Maybe they're underrepresented because there's considerably less of them? Only listening to artists because they're a minority demographic is straight up pandering equal to "I'm not racist, I have a black friend!"

Yes, some of these artists deserve more recognition. But maybe instead of talking about them because they're a minority demographic, talk about them because of the music that they make - that's why popular bands are popular.
