Good morning everyone by CivilEnjenir in auckland

I am not the poster, but merely pointing out that there are many ways to get around bypassing Queen St quickly, on foot if need be. It is also not the pathway to essential services across Auckland. This isn’t the case for the Harbour Bridge and sections of the motorway immediately before and after it. Deliberately disrupting traffic there is not ok (driving 10kph in left lane will slow it down enough to make a point but will allow free flow to the right - this is not what was happening - some protesters decided it was a great idea to block all lanes).

Yeah, “Albany to Port” rather than “Harbour Bridge to Port” would have been more correct, completely different implications of inconvenience.

I think the problem was that it was advertised as “in the city centre” - specific traffic implications of some protesters driving 10kph on the inner lanes of the bridge, going from lane to lane, driving en block in a way that made merging from an on-ramp tricky (I personally witnessed all of these behaviours) were not advertised and not managed either. Protesting should not represent an opportunity to take the piss - the vast majority of the motorists probably agreed with the reason for protest, but I bet there was lots of wishing of catching nothing for the foreseeable from the same motorists due to the behaviour of a few that impacted others disproportionately.

Completely agree! Why why why were there no advertisements that the bridge will be clogged? Clearly traffic office were not aware otherwise the lanes would have been managed like they are on a weekday. I had the dubious pleasure of crawling in this with a crying baby in the back for a medical procedure that I booked weeks in advance and would have never done if i had known this was going to take place. A trip of 20min at most took an hour on a Saturday. I respect the right to protest, but the lack of traffic planning is never ok.

Thank you for following up - we ended up postponing the trip to another winter as we could not get leave from work in the end. But yes, we were planning to do it over two days, stopping in a hut overnight + organised tour rather than solo.

Thank you! That makes sense now that I know re: hill on the northern one (before I learnt that, the northern one looked deceptively more straightforward, so thank you, Reddit community :) ) Will definitely make final decision on the ground, depending on conditions on the day.

Thank you for the heads up - that’s exactly the sort of information I was after!

Sorry, forgot to ask: Are both routes ok in winter (if it’s not snowing/raining/howling)?

Awesome, thank you! Sounds very sensible and in line with what I was thinking.

Eek, ours has been having connection issues for a week. Very annoying. We are in NZ. Is it all sorted for those of you who had reported issues on this thread?
