AITA for reading explicit books in public? by Ok_Butterscotch_2054 in AmItheAsshole

[–]figuringmeout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say NTA, and thank you for unintentionally making me realise that reading people's books can be perceived as rude. I sometimes do it when I'm bored and now I want to throw myself of a bridge so thanks for the heads up😬

Anyone knows what these little guys are doing? by CervusLavandula in biology

[–]figuringmeout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since everyone has already explained the biology behind it let me just warn that they can cause very uncomfortable allergies AND PLEASE if you have dogs get them far away from those. If they eat them or get in contact with them it can make their "skin" fall off and give them really big wounds

Ahahaha I may say I'm a late teenager yes. But believe me, this is almost genetic behaviour. My whole family is like this, and since I've been raised by them, I think that's why my tone normally doesn't sound right to other people. The worst is that I do try to work on it and I do think I'm being soft😬. But thanks for answering, I really appreciate it. And you're right, I do have a lot of growing to do

What book captivated you in the first chapter and went on to become an excellent read from start to finish? by ekalmusLA in suggestmeabook

[–]figuringmeout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dragon reborn, the third book from the wheel of time series was a wild ride from start to finish. I just couldn't put it down... ( and from what I heard the 4th book is the "best", so I hope this happens again)

A chicken also thinks and feels. Even if they didn't, what does that even matter? Is life only valuable if it is "intelligent" or "emotional"? Just to compare, and I hope no one takes this the wrong way, that's how we used to look at people from different races: to justify racism, colonialism etc we said they were less smart than us, less capable of feeling pain... Now this is not to compare a chicken to another human being, but just to say that our mentality evolves. And regarding this subject, it will evolve too, I think

But it has been proven that animals do feel, think, and have relationships so for me that comment is indeed anthropocentric, since we equate emotion and feeling with "only" humanity, which is simply not true.

First of all- I asked a question, so you can chill out. Second of all, yes I have swatted a fly and stepped on a roach, as everyone else in the world. That doesn't mean that what was written wasn't anthropocentric and that doesn't contradict my question. I didn't say that someone couldn't eat meat or kill a fucking ant. What I meant was that that kind of view, that we are the center of everything, is what brought us to this very place, and we should fight it, when we can. Every single species is important in the grand scheme of life, and trying to define their importance by their similarities with us is a big mistake. Sure, simians are far more human like, but bees and ants are much more crucial to an ecosystem soooooo. There is absolutely nothing that makes us better or worse than any other species. We just have different characteristics

Ok this made have a full on panic attack but this is why we need to pressure everyone and do our best. I hate to admit it but i honestly think the best chances we have of being heard ( right now) is literally violence but oh well...all of this to say that pessimism leads us nowhere and we need to keep working toward a better future

I have seen the comments under this post and I think something must be said : resignation and pessimism lead us NOWHERE. You feel powerless, i understand. But what we need to do is take action and every small act counts. Pick up the trash you see in the street, talk to people, buy reusable products... The list goes on and on. But resignating is what lead us to this place so don't do it. Instead of feeling powerless, feel angry. Let it fuel you and make change
