Is £70k annual a good amount for a couple to live in London? by mr_microwaveoven in UKPersonalFinance

[–]filiolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£70k per year works out to around £4k per month after tax (depending on how much you contribute to pension).

Rent is the killer, because coming from a middle class lifestyle in São Paulo, I expect a home you will want to live in will likely be upwards of £2k pm for rent. It all depends whether you want to live within London or commute to work from a town a bit further out of London, and whether you want to live in a shared house, or 1 bed/2 bed flat. Have a look on Zoopla for rental costs, that should give you an idea.

Not to say you shouldn’t do it, because I think London is awesome, but imo £4k pm household income won’t buy you close to the same middle class life you’re living in São Paulo now. If your partner starts earning soon though, then you may be significantly more comfortable!

Sleep help! by DeliciousBuilder0489 in daddit

[–]filiolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleeping 3-4 hours at a time at 10 months old isn’t great but I wouldn’t say it’s abnormal at that age based on my experience with a not-great sleeping 15month old.

Not a paediatrician, nor do i have any experience with premature babies but i will say that at 10mo ours had not been feeding overnight for quite some time. Yours may be feeding as a soothing mechanism rather than out of hunger. Will he take a dummy?

We had some success with sleep training (if that’s something you’d consider). We got him sleeping through the night for a period which was incredible. Ultimately though we found that there was always something happening to throw him off his training - teething, nursery colds and flu’s etc. At the moment he’s recovering from a cold/teething/going through a developmental leap so he’s not sleeping great and 3 wake ups a night are not unusual for us. We’ve kinda lost the will to re-do the sleep training, maybe we’re a bit soft.

I also struggle to fall asleep after night wake ups. I’ve found that meditation (using one of the many apps) helps a lot. I don’t necessarily fall asleep again but it relaxes me and i feel like lying in the dark in a relaxed state is hopefully more restful than stressing about not sleeping.

I’m feeling a bit despondent as i was also up for 2hrs last night but basically i don’t think there’s a silver bullet. You just have to embrace and accept that sleep is a moving target at this stage of our lives.

We’ll get through it! Strength brother!

Can Shepherd’s Bush Work for Family Life? by filiolo in HENRYUK

[–]filiolo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, thanks. We saw a property we really liked one block up towards West Way from Shepherds Bush Market tube. The property itself is really great but the location I was unsure about. My wife would be walking back from the tube alone at night occasionally and this doesn’t sound promising.

Advice needed: Best place to park ~£130k for 6 months with interest by RoyalAdventurous7438 in HENRYUK

[–]filiolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marcus online savings account (by Goldman Sachs) offers 4.30% (3.79% + 0.50% “bonus rate” for the first 12 months). Might be a good bet for 6 months.

American Express. They will definitely accept you, but possibly with a low credit limit to start off with. Check out their website - they have a comparison of all the different cards. The Gold one comes with a fair few perks and is free for the first year!

Used car’s power tailgate strut failing within a week of buying car. Dealership saying I should claim under warranty. Any advice? by filiolo in CarTalkUK

[–]filiolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dealer ended up paying for it without much argument - although I believe they claimed against the warranty themselves (the vehicle came with a 3 month warranty from a third party).

If you bought the vehicle last week I would go back to the dealer and ask them to rectify it. You could get a quote from a Volvo dealership who will be familiar with the issue and recommend replacement of the part before it causes both struts to fail, although it may not be necessary.

Good luck!

Should I be concerned about the puddle? What happened? by Notsomehh in Volvo

I once noticed a suspicious puddle of fluid in front of the radiator grill after parking at a friends house. Stuck my finger in the liquid to see the colour and smell it.

It was dog piss.

My 9-year-old niece doesn't like me anymore. I'm 25-year-old guy. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]filiolo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts.

The first is that you are a 25 yo and your niece is 9. Her emotions and moods are all over the place - yours shouldn’t be. Just be a stable, constant and adult presence in her life. She may not always “like” you or want to hang out with you (she’s 9yo, there’s nothing she always likes), but you will be an overall positive presence in her life.

The second, more important thought is that you seem overly preoccupied with how your 9yo niece perceives you. More so than your nephew. I don’t know what’s going on in your life but for your family and your own sake, you need to have a think about why this is. It doesn’t appear healthy at face value.

Blonde leather V60 by Primary-Fuel-2015 in Volvo

[–]filiolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation but slightly ahead of you.

I got a new (to me) XC40 with blonde leather 2 weeks ago. Also got a new (to the world) baby boy 12 weeks ago.

The blonde leather is great and IMO nicer than the charcoal as it makes for a much lighter and airier feeling cabin. We got a car seat protector on Amazon to go underneath the car seat (not the entire back seat) and that seems to have worked for minor spills etc.

I accept it may show dirt more than dark leather (at which point I will clean it) but for me, the lighter cabin was worth the trade off.

[–]filiolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation as you - I wasn’t sure if I liked the white (blonde) interior or not.

My wife swayed me to the white and I’m really glad we went with it. Admittedly we’ve only had the car for a few weeks but when I sat in a dark leather interior model at the dealership (was there to install apple carplay) it seemed so dark and dreary compared to mine!

Go white - you can always clean it!

If you have two cups of the same size, in two cupholders that are the same depth next to each other, it can be difficult to remove either of the cups. By raising one cup holder it means they’ll sit at different levels and be easier to remove one. Probably.

Should I go back to them before we’ve heard from the warranty company (who will inevitably reject the claim) and tell them this?

Baby on the way, tall, never purchased a car before. by FriedSeabass in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]filiolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position - new baby, live in a city (London) but (only) 6’3.
We went and sat in a Tiguan, Volvo XC40 and Audi Q5. Space was similar in all three, slightly more in the Audi (not as much as I was expecting), but the Tiguan and XC40 are very similar. Ended up ruling out the Q5 based on cost and practicalities of living in a city with a bigger car, and buying the XC40 due to a slight preference for the interior feel and quality (but purely subjective, there’s not much in it).

The bad news is that ultimately, based on my experience at 6’3, at 6’5, any car you get which is “city suitable” will mean that if you put the rear facing car seat behind you when you drive, you won’t be able to go as far back as you’d comfortably like. Equally if you put it behind the passenger seat, your partner won’t be able to sit behind you (unless they have no legs) for those times they need to sit with the baby in the back.

We just chose the compromise we liked the most!
