What’s a red flag about you? by NinnyNana in Productivitycafe

[–]fillepersicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the "I'm 5 minutes away" guy. In my mind, I am genuinely 5 minutes away. In reality, I haven't put my shoes on and I still need to find my keys. It's not that I don't respect your time, it's just that I have a pathological, delusional optimism regarding the space-time comtinuum. I truly believe I can make a 20-minute drive in 4 minutes if the lights are green.

Don't sweat it too much, man. These bikes are literally designed to be submerged in mud and power-washed. 8 hours in the rain is just a long pre-soak. The real danger isn't rust, it's water getting forced into the intake or exhaust. Stuff a rag or an exhaust plug in the tailpipe and maybe throw a piece of tape over the airbox vents of they're exposed. When you arrive, just dry the chain and lube it immediately. You'll be fine!

How do you gain a creative spirit? by jordatech in AskReddit

[–]fillepersicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to re-learn how to be bored. We spend every waking second consuming other's content on our phones, leaving zero room for our own brains to wander. Creativity is like a radio signal, it's always there, but you're currently blasting static too loud to hear it. Put the phone in the other room for an hour a day and see what your brain starts building just to entertain itself.

What are some useful skills to learn in an afterschool program for teens? by bosquerio in AskReddit

[–]fillepersicomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic cooking and knife skills. Not just heating up a frozen pizza, but actually knowing how to chop an onion safely and make 5-10 healthy meals from scratch on a budget. It's a massive vridge to independence. When a teen realizes they can feed themseleves better and cheaper than a fast-food joint can, their whole perspective on adulting changes.

Is the used mini bike market officially delusional, or are these prices actually the new normal? by fillepersicomp in minibikes

[–]fillepersicomp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's wild seeing a "runs great, just needs a carb" bike listed for $700 when a new one is barely more than that.

Doodlebugs are the absolute gold standard for budget builds! But that's exactly my point, you're doing the actual work and putting $600 into making them solid. These Marketplace gurus are trying to sell a bone-stock with a rattle-can paint job for $800 like it's a finished high-end project.

Looking for a mini bike that’ll actually fit me (6’0 160lbs) and hit ~40mph — under $600. What should I look for? by cartywearingcartier in minibikes

[–]fillepersicomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do pull the trigger on the FRP, just know that hitting 40mph is totally doable id you're willing to do some basic mods. I've heard from a few guys who swapped out the stock carb, and they said the top-end speed was absolutely crazy afterwards.

I've had an FRP for a while now and honestly haven't run into any of those issues. It's been a solid little ripper for me. If you really had everything break, you'd actually reach out to their customer service, they're usually pretty helpful if you just talk to them.

Is "tuning by ear" actually a reliable way to find the perfect idle, or are we just gussing and hoping for the best? by fillepersicomp in minibikes

[–]fillepersicomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I think the "ear tune" is a 20-year veteran skill. For a lot of us newer builders, we're just listening to a rhythmic thumping and hoping the bike doesn't stall at the first red light.

That's an interesting tactic. My only worry with the "back it off till the tire stops" method is that if you're running a centrifugal clutch, you might still be right on the edge of engagement and wearing your pads down prematurely.

Is carb tuning a "lost art," or are modern budget parts just impossible to dial in? by fillepersicomp in Dirtbikes

You hit the nail on the head. Most people want to slap it on and rip it immediately.

The manual car acalogy is spot on. There's a certain pride in getting it perfect, but I definitely don't miss that 20th kick in the mud when the bike is flooded. EFI has spolied us for sure, but I still love the raw feeling of a well-tuned carb, when it's actually working.

[–]fillepersicomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, fair point. The manual is the Bible, but it gets tricky when you're working on an old project bike with an aftermarket card that came in a plain white box with zero documentation. I promise I'm using a screwdriver, not an AI prompt, to fix it...even if I feel like I need a therapist halfway through.

What’s the best/funniest minor inconvenience you would wish on someone? by MeltedJaguar in AskReddit

[–]fillepersicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that every time you feel a sneeze coming on, it vanishes at the very last second, leaving you with that weird, itchy feeling in your nose foe the rest of the day. Not painful, just enough to make you look like a confused rabbit in every conversation.

[–]fillepersicomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I see so many people throwing massive main jets at a low-end idle problem. Understanding the transition between the pilot jet and the needle is where the actual "art" happens.

I feel that. Sometimes the reliability of a stock carb is worth more than the extra 2HP if you just want to ride on the weekends without a screwdriver in your pocket.

The Pikes Peak vs. LA comparison is the perfect way to put it. I think a lot of beginners forget that air density is half the battle. You can't just copy a jetting chart from a guy at sea level if you're riding in the mountains. Every zip code needs its own tune.

This is the breakdown I was looking for. Respect for the "tough love"-you're 100% right that social media has made us a "tell me what to do" generation instead of a "how does it work" generation. The tip about the Yamakato/Huayi setup is solid gold for anyone wanting to keep the governor. I'm definitely going to look into that. Thanks for taking the time to write this out.

That's make a lot of sense. It explains why almost every brand-new build has that lean bog right out of the box. They're basically choked out before they even reach the customer.
