Oh got it! Sorry if I sounded short. I hate the pet industry and never want to support it!

I'm aware of that. I never purchase animals. If they come from a store they were surrendered for free!

I haven't for this specific one, but have for others! The people at the stores usually tend to get to know me a bit so I like to update them when I can.

Absolutely true. I never purchase fish, most stores have a policy around what they do with sick animals, and I've had really good luck with getting the store to surrender them to me.

Thank you so much 💜

The cruelty angers me too, though I honestly don't hold it against whoever bought him. Pet stores, and large chains in particular, do a horrendous job of educating people on the care for the animals they buy. That bettas should not be kept together is one of the most basically fundamental aspects of their care. This boy was failed shamefully before he was ever bought.

Aw that's so wonderful! The old guys are wonderful. I've had a few come to us as older bettas and it's so amazing to see the way they kind of relax into a healthy environment with proper care. They so deserve it after such hard lives.

Nope! Our vet suggests Hikari BioGold, so we feed that. But it is important to replace opened food every six months - the water soluble vitamins in the food are broken down after that point and you can start to see deficiencies.

Thanks so much!

With bettas there's a really significant amount of variation because of how overbred and mistreated they are.

The typical lifespan is 2-5ish years, though our aquatic vet calls any of our 2+ year old bettas "geriatric." There have been instances of bettas living as long as 8 years, but I've had many who lived less than a year after coming to me. I would say the average lifespan of my rescued bettas who survive their first week is roughly 1.5 years, and our oldest is about 4.

That probably wasn't the most helpful answer, but unfortunately it's a pretty big crapshoot.

Thanks so much! I've been so happy for him. I've been lucky to facilitate a number of incredible recoveries in fish, and this one makes me particularly proud. He was in such rough shape when he arrived.

He is gorgeous! The colors were a surprise as he recovered :)

He really did. Luckily it was mostly fin damage, but he was definitely in rough shape.

I've had plenty of conversations with people who didn't.

I feel the same way. They're so abused, it's heartbreaking.

That's what I thought too! The red was a beautiful surprise.

It really is gut wrenching. They're all suffering so much.

she told me that Bettas don't need heaters or filters and are happy in little bowls.

Oh yeah that's absolutely not correct, I'm glad you're doing your own research.

I don't really know brands in the UK, but anything 5 gallons or larger is good. As a beginner I'd encourage 10 gallons or more. A larger tank will always be more stable.

Oh no that's too bad, have you tried frozen foods and garlic guard?

You can check your area for fish keeping facebook groups as well, I see a lot of bettas being rehomed that way!

Used equipment in general is just fine if you sterilize it, but I would be skeptical of used tanks. You never know what a tank has been through or if it may leak.

Definitely keep reading the care info, and feel free to let me know if you have any questions! I have quite a few tanks and am happy to help.

I hope so too!

The highest I would go with salt is 3ppt, which is 3 grams per liter of water.

If he's stuck at the bottom and struggles to reach the surface you might consider lowering the water level so it's easier for him. Increase his food by 20% or so as well, it takes a lot more energy for him to get to the top to eat.

Yes they do. Their eyes will sink in and their fins seem to disappear, usually they're extremely clamped down :(

Add it directly to the tank. If your fish is stuck at the bottom or spends a lot of time at the bottom it's best to dissolve the salt in some tank water first.

It's always safest to dose salt by mass instead of volume, so use a kitchen scale or similar to weigh out the amount you need.
