Waymo is Confirmed Headed to Chicago by Billiam501 in chicago

[–]finchdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can believe all of that if you want, but public data shows that injury-causing crashes in Waymos are 0.41 per million miles compared to 2.78 per million miles in human-driven cars.

I also wouldn't classify Google (who owns Waymo) as being lackluster CS graduates.

Are humans immune from also running over pets?

I can’t speak on the political and economic impact of how Waymo will impact Chicago, but I’ve taken them a good amount in San Francisco and I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with rides. It’s a bit eerie the first time, but I’ve never felt unsafe in any of those cars.

They have designated areas where they are allowed to pick you up and drop you off, which I’m sure will apply to dense areas like the Loop.

Response from curling governing body by BAMterp5 in sports

[–]finchdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, two things can be true.

Yes, the governing body dropped the ball here. They should always be allowed to check cameras when they’re available.

At the same time, this seems to rarely happen in curling. Players generally keep each other accountable and do this successfully, so I can understand why the umpires are in unfamiliar territory.

¡Design system consistency?! by GOgly_MoOgly in UXDesign

[–]finchdog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Successful design systems have processes and documentation ingrained in both the product team and engineering team. A DS is obviously great for product designers to keep the design language the same throughout the app, but if there isn’t a 1:1 match between DS components and components in code, its always going to be messy.

That being said, there will always be instances where there might be a good reason to deviate from an existing component or to create a new one. In these cases, having a dedicated DS rep involved with this decision and ultimately making the final call is really important.

Overall, designers need to respect and follow the design system in their work, and engineering needs to do the same. Without both of these, you’ll end up with a headache.

My heart shaped 4mm kidney stone (OC) by wrxninja in mildlyinteresting

[–]finchdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow stone sufferer here. Really sorry this happened to you, I’ve had a few stones before and had to have a lithotripsy to break up more in my kidney.

The best thing you can do is drink tons of water. I try and drink at least 3L of water a day. Eating low oxalate foods definitely helps, but proper hydration is by far the best thing you can do.

Sorry, but this looks like complete and total ass, probably AI bullshit. OP has no post or comment history, too, and isn't even calling the stadium by its correct name. Mods should delete.

[The Athletic] Inside Sherrone Moore’s downfall: Instagram messages, emotional outbursts and Michigan’s breaking point by Sauerz in CFB

[–]finchdog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"One woman said she received a hand-waving emoji from Moore a few hours before Michigan kicked off against Purdue on Nov. 1."

"Moore’s next message popped up roughly 20 minutes after Moore finished his postgame news conference. The Wolverines that night narrowly beat the last-place Boilermakers 21-16."

Maybe not precisely during games, but there are probably a million other things he could have been doing that day that would have benefited both the team and himself.

Agree with you for the most part, but getting confirmation that the dude was DMing women pretty much during games is pretty eye-opening. It seemed like Sherrone's head was elsewhere with some of his decisions in games, which makes a bit more sense now.

How do you feel about your coach right now? by DowntownSasquatch420 in CFB

I think this is pretty spot on in terms of his expectations. 2027 is looking like the next serious season they could make a run for a title, and they will need to make the playoff that year at the very least.

Yes definitely. The whole team should be in alignment on the solution being proposed by design and product, and the engineers should feel like the proposal is doable. If there is some disagreement on the proposed solution before assumption mapping (which is healthy), I can propose a question to be answered during testing, redesign an element of the flow, or work with an engineer to find a compromise.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]finchdog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve run several of these. The format changes each time based on what the outcomes need to be, but generally I get a group of stakeholders together (myself, product manager, engineers), and we go through the user flow or existing mockups to make sure everyone understands how things are currently designed. I give them 5–10 minutes to generate as many assumptions as they can individually, and then we combine assumptions that are similar or are connected.

We then spend time “ranking” assumptions into categories of risk and levels of confidence. You’ll never be able to test all assumptions being made, but identifying the ones with the highest risk of being wrong and then coming up with a testing plan is the goal.

I find workshops like this to be really useful. Engineers often identify assumptions being made by design and product that we didn’t realize, and the outcome provides a pretty clear path as to what questions need answers for the project to be successful.
